I've been using this phone for atleast a month now. and i've noticed in the log my phone keeps on trying to connect to my home wi-fi, and if that isnt available it tries to connect to Vodafone AU Internet (one of the accesss points). now this costs me money as i am on prepaid!! I'm not using any widgets that require to go online, i put it in idle mode and it tries to connect. i dont even know where its going to.
Can someone suggest to me what is happening? do i have a virus!?
thanks

first, quick press the power button and go to offline mode, it wont let you change the setting while its trying to connect. then;
menu > settings > connectivity > destinations > internet > (your wap connection name) > use access point > change this to 'after confirmation'
then change your profile back to your normal one.
also, if you have set up nokia messaging, it will use the internet even when it isn't open. you can change that in the 'when to sync' part of the options.

It's probably not a virus, more likely one of the pre-installed apps,
A smart phone is meant to work with connection to the internet, without it it is little more than an ornament, and you will not be using anywhere like your phones potential
Suggestions
1) Buy a data bundle I'm sure you will find one from your data provider for a few dollars a month
2) Get a cheaper non internet enabled mobile phone22-Dec-2009 06:10 PM
I fully agree with synth, it is totally pointless having a smartphone without a data plan, I have posted on dozens of people with this 'problem', research a phone before you buy, if you want to make a fashion statement buy a designer 'T' shirt, they require no data plan. And despite this sarcasm, I can only emphorcise, get a data plan, without it the fantastic machine you've puchased is crippled, the phone deserves it, and so do you . You wouldn't buy a porche if you couldn't afford fuel !
Good Luck
and GET A DATA PLAN, you won't regret it.
If I have helped at all, a click on the White Star is always appreciated :

, ok i will convince my parents to get me a data plan but in the mean time what should i do to prevent this irratic connecting? oh and a data plan requires a contract right?

Before anything else I gotta tell you, having a phone like this with pre paid service is not a very smart Idea but anyways that's beside the point, ummm, lets see, I personally don't have Amazon or Time lite or lever or counter or blackboard or compass or Windows live messenger, I don't see how those have anything to do with data usage, I'd say delete the AP news and Bloomberg, I don't see how you need them right now, just to see if that helps your situation. What do you use for email? And one more thing, go on and do this for me:
Menu->settings->connectivity->admin setting->packet data->packet data connection change that to when needed and also change the access point to none
and also go to
Menu->settings->connectivity->destinations-> internet->and go under which ever packet data you use and change the setting for use access point to after confirmation, mines on automatic since I have a data plan. Try those two and then also tell me what email you use we should figure this problem out. But the I say if you get rid of Bloomberg and AP news and accuweather and try the stuff I said we I'd say your problem should be solved. You can always install them back one by one and if the problem comes back then you know what program causes it.

I do have the same question - how to control phone getting online - but not because of money but because of battery. I've changed the profile to 'offline', changed all destination APs (two WLANs and 3G connection) to connect after confirmation, but getting 'Phone is currently in offline. Change profile to access network?' question is not actually a confirmation. Answering 'No' doesn't change the profile, so I have to answer 'Yes' and the phone connects (and drains battery at an amazing rate). Is there a way to find out why the phone is trying to connect (i.e. what app/widget)? Nokia email client is set to offline, Facebook widget too, there are no other widgets or running applications requiring network access, but the phone still connects... Any idea?
