My n97 is showing that the phone memory is almost full. Of the 73MB available, I have 9MB free. I've gone into everything on the memory and plugged it into computer and can't see anything that takes up anywhere near that amount of space.
I have updated to firmware 20.0.019 after it was eventually released for my code and it made sweet F A difference, even though it's supposed to free up memory.
If anyone knows anything about how to sort this please let me know, as it's starting to **bleep** me off by making videos jump and i can't update other things like ovi maps because "memory is full".
Please help, this is ruining my phone!

Had been on top of cache, but cleared it and now have 14.5MB free. Already deleted everything from phone that was unnecessary. Nothing in any folder, apart from a licence for adobe.

Do take note that N97 OS (Operating System) occupies on the Phone memory which technically leaves us approximately 55 - 56MB from 73MB after the firmware and built-in applications installed.
So the remaining amount of memory will be used to store PIM (Personal Information Manager) i.e. Contacts, Calendar entries, Purchased Application or Song Licenses, Web browser cache, PC Suite and/ or Ovi Suite sync plug-ins etc.
I do suggest using the Mass memory or the memory card to store messages, images or videos, sound recordings etc. You can do this by going to the respective application settings. This will free up a little bit more space.
For messages, please follow below:
Messaging > Options > Settings > Other > Memory in use
Select Mass memory or memory card, it will prompt you to transfer messages to the new location, select 'Yes'. Keep original messages, select 'No'.
Do take note that updated Ovi Maps application (approximately 9330kb) downloadable from 'Software update' application, will be installed to the Phone memory. So this significantly reduce Phone memory space.
Antivirus will be automatically installed to the Phone memory as this application is required to integrate with the OS to protect it from virus etc. attacks. So installing this application is not necessary, unless required. My advise is, never open messages or running applications recieved or downloaded from an unknown source.
I wouldn't suggest 'hard resetting' the phone as this method will delete everything, including your purchased Adobe application license.
However, you can try downloading 'Memory Reorganizer' from 'Software update' application to reorganize the Phone memory accordingly. This should give you about few MB more.
I would advise you to install 3rd Party software to the Mass Memory and/ or memory card. Clear Web browser cache periodically and uninstall which you rarely use.
Try it out and you should be able to squeeze more memory.

It is also advised that you do a soft reset after a software update, this will involve a bit of time and work , but will give you 40-50meg free on your phone memory. Back up contacts, Calendar and Notes ONLY (backing up settings can cause conflict with the new software, and cause it to function less efficiently) Dial *#7370# followed by 12345 the phone will reset to 'out of the box' condition. When you set up your phone again and re-install apps etc, put everything you can on E (as suggested) and only use Nokia software you REALLY REALLY need and use as it nearly always installs on C. Nokia Messaging installs on C , I prefer the standard email client and it saves you wasting several meg. When you re-install Maps 3.04 delete all the share location stuff from installed apps, it gives you 3-4 meg back and if you really want to 'share location' use Nokia Communities. it installs on E and you can do it from there. Also as you install things, check file manager for C memory to weigh up memory use compared to app use (if you don't really use it , don't install it).
Good Luck
PS you can also delete Ovi store and just go there via web browser, just reject attempts to get you to reinstall it and say you're happy to continue using browser, bit of a pain , but for the amount of time you use it, it's better than losing a couple of meg on C perminantly ![]()

While on the subject of all the junk that ends up cluttering C: on the N97, anybody have a clue as to what the "view" files are for?
While monitoring PC Suite do a backup of the N97, I was amazed at watching it process hundreds of files such as the following:
C:\Data\d2ddump\view.726
And I'm talking of close to a thousand of the things. What do they contain? Are they necessary?
Thanks.

Hi there jcourcoul..
May I know how many options you selected? As there are 9 of them :-
User files from the phone memory
User files from the mass memory
User files from a memory card
Contacts
Calendar
Notes
Messages
Bookmarks
Settings
I ran Nokia PC Suite after shutting down my Ovi Suite and selected Nokia Content Copier. I selected the following :-
User files from the phone memory
Contacts
Calendar
Notes
Bookmarks
Settings
It backed up everything quickly in few seconds until it reaches 'Phone model-specific backup', which took about a couple of minutes.
I have about 203 Contacts with 8 Groups, few Calendar entries, not many bookmarks in Nokia Web browser basically not many applications installed to the Phone memory, except for latest Ovi Maps application and its components and Ovi Suite sync plug-ins. And my Phone memory in total is 42.1MB as most applications, theme files are installed to the Mass memory.
May I know how you're able to view 'C:\Data\d2ddump\view.726'?

I select all except "User files from a memory card", which is removable anyway, so I can reconstruct the phone from zero if the need arises*. Amongst the options PC Suite offers is creating a log file of what it did, from where I got the full name and path of the example "view" file.
I guess I could transfer one of the files over to a PC or Mac and use a hex editor to investigate its contents. But still, seems unusual to have so many of them.
I also do a "self-backup" of the phone onto the memory card, which is the only thing I use the card for, BTW, by using the /Menu/Applications/Office/File Manager/Backup feature.
*I've had to do two full erase/reinstall gigs on the phone since I got it in February. Once when the QuickOffice installer went berserk leaving the phone in a state that couldn't get onto the Menu screen without restarting and once to finally get the thing to install the Ovi Maps 3.3 app. via OTA updating. Fortunately, Maps 3.4 installed without so much pain.
EDIT: so I got one of the view files over to the Mac using Bluetooth device browsing. It appears to be a VCard, in other words a contact from the Contacts list. Ok, yeah, so I have a lot of contacts, OK ?!?![]()

So its vCard. Hmmm.. I forgot to click on the report button. Early morning I guess.. There are few ways to backup the phone actually, depending on the user.
As for me, I usually backup Contacts to the Mass memory or memory card by going to Contacts > Options > Mark/ Mark all > Options > Copy businesscard > To other memory. Then transfer the 'Contacts' folder in 'Other' from Mass memory or memory card to my PC.
Another way, is to backup my phone using 'File manager' then connect my phone to the PC via cable and select 'Mass storage'. Then locate a 'hidden' folder 'Backup' and transfer that to the PC. In case I can't 'restore' my phone using 'Nokia Content Copier'. Tedious it may be but I prefer being on the safe side. ![]()
