Got it on Vodafone. Firstly, Voda are useless!
Secondly, my phone has the following issues:
1. Widgets unstable.
2. AccuWeather not downloading anything or unable to get my location.
3. AP News widget not downloading.
4. Facebook app. not working properly.
5. Set-up my emails, and they ALL got deleted and disappeared a day later!
6. Screen transition is a joke...screen either freezes or goes blank, especially when switching to keyboard mode.
7. 3G signal is some areas is really bad, when other phones on the same network have a better signal.
Nokia...PLEASE sort this out, its a joke that there is no firmware update available in the UK...I am actually trying to return this phone but Vodafone are making it difficult to return it, so IF I somehow end up stuck with the phone if ofcom are unable to help me sort vodafone out I want a phone that actually works!!! Get your act together because right now this isn't an iphone killer...apple must be laughing while all of your customers are feeling ripped off! Sort it please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you on the newest FW or is your model a VF branded one and they haven´t approved the update yet?
I´ve had a N97 for a week now and I haven´t experienced that kind of problems although I´m running on the old FW...
The day we stop improving is the day we stop being good.

I am a UK user on the 3 Network (I am very close to cancel contract and everything unless I get this update in the next few days)
THE GOOD: The Phone looks superb
THE BAD: The sofware is not to the level of the phone
THE WEIRD: Within a few hours of usage the phone crashes and behaves randomly or erratic
THE BAD: The Firmware installed with the phone is rubbish
THE GOOD: The new firmware is suppose to fix most of the problems
THE WEIRD: The new firmware has not been released in the UK yet
THE GOOD: With the 3 network the Windows Live Messenger is FREE (no need to have internet package)
THE BAD: You can not use Windows Live Messenger via the WI-FI
THE WEIRD: If you try to use the Windows Live MSN via WI-FI then the MSN no longer works (only solution is to uninstall and install again)
THE GOOD: The touchscreen and the keyboard
THE BAD: Erratic behavior when you slide the phone to use the keyboard
THE WEIRD: Sometimes the screen does not allign properly from landscape to portrait.
THE GOOD: The 32GB capacity on the phone
THE BAD: The internal memory for the phone is only like 30MB + 32GB Mass storage
THE WEIRD: With so much memory the phone does not seem to handle files over 2GB or AVI files
THE GOOD: All the applications that you can use, brilliant for web-browing
THE BAD: You have to take the baterry out when if freezes nothing else seems to work
THE WEIRD: If you are patient then you can leave it in a frozen state for a while and then eventually recovers itself.
This is just a summary of some issues that I have found so far.
The more I use the phone the more I like it and hate it. Hopefully the new firmware will be released soon in the UK and fix most of these issues
My N97 is locked to the 3 Network my current Firmware is version 10.0.012
Main problems I get are the Windows Live Messenger seems to crash most of the time I open the phone.
Also If I use the Windows Live Messenger with WI-FI then the MSN will no longer work (have to uninstall it and install it again)

I've had aload of annoying issues as well (on Vodaphone) but reading some of the other posts around it seems quite afew bugs have been fixed with fireware v11.*** whatever it is.
Sadly though does'nt look like any of the UK networks have edited the fireware for their likeing to release it yet but it is annoying with half the apps sat there looking at you going what you want me to do ![]()

Id sack msn messenger off and try palringo. It works a treat and with many different messaging/chat services.

You have just described the problem with taking out brand new hardware as a branded product.
Nokia are usualy pretty quick with Firmware releases that patch the major issues that come to light soon after the innitial release of the product. However the networks seem to lag by 6months + in authorising the releases.
And unfortunatly if the N96 is anything to go by Voda are currently the worse (All other UK nets running v12 Voda last week were still v11)
Best advice is if you want the shiney new toy then eat the cost up front and go for a vanilla phone with a cheaper sim only contract or PAYG. If your budget wont stretch to that and you need to spread the cost of the unit over the lifetime of a contract by going branded, then go for a model that has been out for at least 6 months ( N96 or 5800),

Mine is unbranded & direct from the Nokia Store, and I have had all these problems & more. I don't think the issue with the firmware can be blamed on branding in this particular case.
The firmware update for the UK still hasn't arrived from Nokia - let alone the branded firmware updates. As a result I'm sending my N97 back as this is the last day of my acceptance period. It's a shame as I like the phone - it just doesn't work to an acceptable level.

I do sympathise. However, I too am in the UK, and have experienced none of the problems you describe in your opening post. My N97 is from Finland, unbranded, straight out of the box, original firmware, on the O2 network.
The only issue I have, in common with everyone else, is the backlightling issue coming out of standby.
I haven't installed any IM progs, so I can't comment there. I guess I've been lucky.

Thanks a lot for this advice I l started to love this phone again and today I have been using this palringo instead and guess what one no problems at all. The phone has worked with no major issues. Is back to an acceptable level.
And the palringo works with wifi as well.
I know it won't be free as the Windows MSN but at the moment I have unlimited data so not a problem.
PS: When I say free I mean that no need to pay for mb or anything with Windows MSN, with Palringo I guess I would have to pay for the mb that I use during the chating or sending or receiveing files.
I believe the 3 network in the UK is probably the only one in the UK with free Windows MSN and SKYPE. reason why they don't work through WIFI. This is good if you just want your phone for chatting and not bother about browinsg the internet or downloading anything else.
But if you have an unlimited package this is irrelevant in my case the internet is an extra £5.
