Did you give the phone a full charge when you first got it?
The only other reason I can think for you having such a poor battery life is if you've got some applications running in the background? Press and hold the menu key and see what's running. Anything that you're not using you can close.
Out of interest, I couldn't find where to switch to GSM only... where abouts is it?!

Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Network -> Network Mode
Gives choice of
Dual Mode
UMTS (3G)
GSM

Hmm that's where I thought it'd be but it doesn't show up on mine. I only get the choice of Dual mode and UMTS...
It might be down to the operator I'm with.. 3...

Try removing any widgets that may access the network (AccuWeather, Facebook, etc) from the homepage, I think they can end up attempting to repeatedly find a connection.

When I was on AT&T, the battery was drained in a matter of hours just sitting idle. I found that when running on AT&T, it couldn't establish a connection to load those widgets as they were sitting there trying to load hour after hour. When this happens, or, it is searching between 3G and EDGE modes, this drains the battery. I removed those widgets and also placed it into EDGE mode manually to prevent it from searching a 3G network. I live in LA and their 3G network is terrible- even with full bars and the display icon showing 3G, it still was unable to maintain a solid connection. I have since gone over to T-Mobile and everything works fine now- there's no battery draining going on and I get a solid connection as well. My battery lasts me three days without charging. Full surfing, texting, tons of emais and plenty of calls. The battery on this thing is nothing short of amazing in my opinion.

Correct me if I am wrong, but, the specs boast better battery life on 3G vs. GSM? When I was on AT&T running on GSM only- it lasted way longer. I also know that this device does not support 3G on T-mobile- edge only but, it is WAY faster than it was when I was running it on AT&T 3G. Nokia spec'd out longer talk times on a 3G network I thought. And conversely, less talk time on GSM. I found it to be opposite.

you've already stated that once.
I wrote it two times, because this is the right.

Yep the GSM option missing due to 3.
3 always remove this option from there firmware as it costs them when your phone locks onto a GSM signal from a cell which is not there own. At least this is what I have read?

Hi guys,
I had the same battery problem. I have upgraded the frimware at v12 then the problems came up. I have tried everything but my battery live was <8 hours and when I plugged the wall charger it never stopped.
I was desprate so I browsed the web and found out how to do a hard reset. The hard resed wiped out everything from the device. After BINGO, battery went up to 2 days. You have to take into account that I am an e-mail addict and also facebook addict
.
The hard reset is to press "3"+"*"+"Green" + Turn on

Yesterday I had a complete failure of my v12 N97 when it comes to battery life.
I left work, got into tram, browsed some web to find a good sushi nearby. I also had BT active since yesterday evening since I was transfering photos to my notebook. When I closed the browser by choosing "Exit" from it's menu the battery was stll at max -- and it was charged fully overnight.
After 2 hours the phone went hungry! All the power that was left in the battery when I browsed the web was consumed! No app were running and I do not use any network widget. Plus I don't have any fancy apps installe, a "clean" 3-week old phone.
This got me thinking -- maybe N97 didn't cease the 3.5G connection [thou was not using nor showing it]. A 2 hour non-stop-on 3.5G link seems like a reasonable way to drain all the remaining power off the battery, isn't it?
Anyone experienced simmilar failure?

things to consider.
if you have a magnet pouch that has potential to damage your phone and diminish battery life
keep your phone on gms only
keep bt and other apps that need constant connection to the internet off or when needed
for me the battery life is great i can go for 2-3 days without charge on moderate/easy use which has not happened with any of my n series previous to this model.
i can go 1.5 days or so with heavy use which is great. i charge my phone every night because my usual use is rather heavy. i keep widgets on two on the home screen, gmail going all the time, handy taskman, speedy go (apps i have open at all times) and still manage to have really good battery life

I do have a magnetic pouch but my N95-4 didn't suffer from it for more than year of carrying it there. The Lion battery there is as good as new.
keep bt and other apps that need constant connection to the internet off or when needed
Good point, forgot about BT but again, on N95-4 BT was constantly on with no significant decrease of battery time.
I also get 2-3 days from N97 when left charging overnight but even low-end phones under no circumstance should experience total drain of power in 2 hours. This assumption does not change for a 600 Euro phone.
It boils down to three possible bugs: a) power metter showing incorrect value b) 3.5G link not being shut down after exiting from web browser c) BT constantly talking to ghosts.
for me the battery life is great i can go for 2-3 days without charge on moderate/easy use which has not happened with any of my n series previous to this model.
I think there's a huge bug in the v12 firmware that causes extremelly fast power consumption and I'm trying to get some clues from other people's experience. Like "I had this happen and I had BT on, just like in your case." I'm trying to live with all the bugs and usability-challenged features that exist in v12 and wait for v13/v20 in hope of solving these issues thus every bit of information counts.
I even got to the point when I'm cheerful for not hearing Nokia Tune for two days now. 8^)
OTOH my experience with my N97's GPS is far from what you read here, on the forum. No problems, good signal, almost-instant lock. And no scratches on the camera yet [fingers crossed]. This is also worth investigating why whe problems manifest in such a variety of "do-s" and "don't-s".

I have the same battery problem. How do I do the hard reset? What is "Green"?
Should the phone be switched off before pressing "3"+"*"+"Green" + "Turn on" ?

for n 97 hard reset is option #3 read all of it carefully it that is really what you want to do. start with code number one and then work down the list i would suggest.
With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.
