I always wished my N95 8GB had an LED to show new e-mails or SMS messages at a glance. Now the N97 has it, but automatic e-mail retrieval seems to be entirely flaky!
I have tried with two accounts, one IMAP the other POP3. Both are set up correctly and both work when retrieving manually. But neither receives e-mail automatically, no matter what settings I use. I’m not a novice and have made this work on the N95 8GB, but the N97 just won’t do what’s needed.
Any ideas please?

IMAP works for me. But to get the notification the phone must be connected to the email server. The only way to open the connection is to open up the e-mail account in messages. And if you close the inbox for your email account, to open another one for instance, the connection is lost and you won't receive any notifications.
I'm been looking for an option to connect to selected email accounts automatically and to remain connect but cannot find it. This sucks big time!!! ![]()
Is there any way around this or a third party e-mail application or widget that does the job?
Regards
Mikael

Guys I've tried the following & it worked fine with me, assuming that you properly configured your e-mail account, check this out:
Let me know if it worked fine with you. Good luck.... ![]()

I have configured my account as below:
IMAP
Automatic retrieval: Message about e-mail > Retrieve & updated
The notification only works when messaging is open in the background and the email account is connected.
princemarvin, could you try disconnecting your account and check if you get the notification?

Mikael

princemarvin, thanks very much for the detailed information. I had already done exactly as you describe, except that I hadn't put the e-mail widget on the home screen. I have done so now and am testing it, but I would rather not have the widget for two reasons: 1) it's taking up space I would prefer to use for something else; 2) it will only check one of my two accounts.
Actually, I normally use ProfiMail which I find really excellent, but sadly it can't control the notification light.

Immediate.
Did your V11 update go well?
I have the email widget on my home screen. I have 3 email accounts set up. The system will only allow 2 email accounts to be set up for automatic retrieval, so I have 2 set up this way. It works fine for me. The notification alert I get works for both of my accounts set for automatic retrieval.
All 3 of my email accounts are pop3 accounts, although 2 of them are hotmail accounts. I have 1 hotmail account, and 1 "true" pop3 account set for automatic retrieval Hotmail accounts are now able to be set up as pop3, and, indeed, the N97 auto email setup treats them as pop3 automatically - it's a doddle.
Have you checked all the Destinations Setups, for your internet apps? Remember all the choices, automatically / when available / when needed, and think through the logic of those choices.
I don't have any messaging program constantly open in the background.
By the way, although only 1 account (the default account) is shown in the home screen widget, the "system" automatically checks both accounts setup for auto retrieval. So, when you hear the alert, and see no little red star on any email shown in the little widget screem, you know the new email is in the other account.

2bad: thanks for checking. The V11 update worked, although several times during the process I received warnings saying the phone had been disconnected from USB, then it connected again. At one point the update stopped and I was instructed to take the battery out of the phone, disconnect the USB cable (and charger, which of course can’t be connected at the same time) and re-connect in a specific sequence. I did so and the update started again, but said the time remaining was 15 minutes for about 12 minutes, then suddenly completed. I had backed the phone up, but in the event all my applications, settings and data remained intact, which I thought was rather impressive. So, yes, it was successful but not without incident! In fact I have had the same issues upgrading the N95 8GB so it didn’t entirely surprise me.
Thanks also for the info re. e-mail, very useful and much appreciated. The built-in application is not happy with my Google Mail IMAP account. It connects, but doesn’t download all messages, even though I have told it to. ProfiMail has no problem at all. I’m testing now with a Yahoo POP3 account and have sent a test message to myself. I’ll know in about a minute whether it has retrieved it automatically.
Edit post: I waited 6 minutes (auto retrieval is set to 5 minutes) and it didn't get the message, even with the widget running. I'm trying again with the mailbox connected, and therefore running in the background. Will report back!

My new firmware stopped with a "Failed" message halfway through. I didn't remove anything, just exited it and restarted from the "check for updates dialogue". It finished in no time. However, as the usb cable was plugged in, the unit was charging at the same time. I removed the cable and, bizarrely, the flashing, moving bars symbol you get when the battery is charging, kept on flashing. At this point the phone was frozen. I couldn't even switch it off. I had to remove the battery, to re-boot the phone. It worked fine after that.

Off the top of my head, have you remembered the "Secure Connection" settings for Gmail and Yahoo. You remember that you have to set the port numbers to 995 (?) etc?
It's been a while since I set up Gmail and Yahoo, so I don't remember the exact settings. I just remember that they're non standard, and need to be set manually in your email client.

Thanks everyone for tips and tricks, but no luck for me. Now I want to hear from Nokia when they will fix these problems? This is supposed to be the most advanced smart phone on the market and the flag ship of Nokia!!!
This is a critical issue!!!
I have firmware v11.0.021
I've been testing for hours now and I still don't get a notification for pop and IMAP when the email account is disconnected. It works fine when connected.
1. I use the e-mail widget
2. I have tested Notify about e-mail > Retrieve & Update
3. I have tested Retrieve e-mail -> Retrieve & Update / Only in home network
Proposed fix: Add setting to autoconnect e-mail account that will allways keep the account connected, reconnect when it gets disconnected etc.
By the way, Nokia messaging supports up to 10 accounts:
Why is only one e-mail account supported in the e-mail widget? Any plans for expanding the support to multiple accounts?
Why can only two accounts have automatic email retrieval or email notification turned on?
Regards
Mikael

Same here, very grateful for all the suggestions, but it doesn't work for me.
I have been using ProfiMail on my N95 8GB for a long time, and have found it superb. It works equally well on the N97 and addresses the notification issue. In fact, it will check for e-mail in as many accounts as you want as often as once a minute, though that is fully adjustable. The only reason I was looking at the built-in mail client on the N97 is because ProfiMail can't access the notification light. However, it does give an audible indication, and puts a figure on screen showing how many new messages you have.
I have no connection with the company, but have found it an excellent program. The downside is that you have to pay for it, but it's available for a free trial:

Thanks immediate. I have tested ProfiMail during the afternoon and it works really well. A shame it can't access the notification light but maybe I can live with that. ProfiMail also needs to be running in the background but it handles the connections to the e-mail servers and is also designed to be running in the background, unlike Nokia Messaging that has an exit button to the bottom right instead of a hide button.
I'm definately going to continue using it, but I would still like to se Nokia fix the e-mail notification problems since it would be nice to get the indication light and to have all messages in one place.

I do agree with you sidan77, it would be good if Nokia addressed the problems and one didn't have to spend money on a thrid party application! Having said that, for me at least it was money well spent on ProfiMail, and the Nokia application in the N97 doesn't really compare IMHO. I've also found the ProfiMail support very good.

I downloaded Profimail - thanks. I've not decided yet whether or not to install it. As I said, I don't have your problem, in that my emails are automatically retrieved as they should be.
At any time, I only have 3 "open apps" as shown on the "options" menu. The only time the Messaging is open is when I get the alert in the home screen wdget, then I tap the widget and it opens Messaging and displays the contents of the default inbox. At that point it asks me if I want to connect to the mailbox, and I can choose yes or no. I should say that I have all my email accounts set to download headers only. If i click on the next tab, for my next email account, and so on.
When I'm done with my emails I click Back through the various Inboxes, and then Exit (from Messaging). When I choose Exit I'm asked if I'm sure, as "Exiting will close active mailbox connection". I always choose Yes.
Now I'm back to only having 3 "open apps" in the background.
I just did a test. I'm at home, and my Wlan is always connected when I'm at home. I disconnected from my Wlan.
I changed my Auto Retrieval setting to "Every 5 minutes". I sent myself an email, to my N97 default email account.
The question was, "Would the auto retrieval setting in the Messaging app wake up, Connect to my Priority Internet Connection (My Wlan), retrieve the new mail headers, exit Messaging (leaving just the 3 usual apps open in the background), and alert me?
The answer is Yes to all. It even tidily disconnected the Wlan connection again, when it was done. Although the OS seems to have noticed the fact that the Wlan came on, and decided to re-connect it. But, I assure you, it was disconnected when I checked it, after hearing the alert.
So, for me the Auto Retrieval works perfectly, which kind of suggests that Nokia has got it right. It has to be in your setup somewhere.
In addition to Profimail, I downloaded a couple of other utilities, to try them out. I particularly like the look of the File Manager thing, xPlore. As an old system administrator, I like techy gizmos that get under the covers of files. I particularly like the look of the included Hex Editor. Watch this space.

That's really interesting 2bad, and I am glad it works for you. I have had it working on the N95 8GB, and my settings are the same on the N97, so I am baffled.
I think you will find ProfiMail is a much better e-mail client than the N97 one, so you might find it worth trying.
I use a program called Task Manager on the N95 8GB, but it won't work on the the N97.

I have just got myself a N97 and am setting it up for use. One of the things that I really need it to do is push for email regularly and keep it updated.
What I've been able to do is set up the email widget through Nokia messaging fairly easily. When I receive emails I get a nice sound telling me and the home screen widget shows me it. This is all perfect. What doesn't happen is it doesn't update when that email has been read on another device, say for instance my PC. It shows as unread seeminly forever until I read it on the phone. Does anyone have any idea how to get it to update properly? I can't understand why it will immediately identify a new email, but can't recognise when that email has been read.
The other thing I have a problem with is going through the phone's system using menu>messaging>gmail the phone seems to think I have over 10,000 emails and the first several are not ones I recognise at all. Have not been able to explore as the phone then crashes and I can't use email from there, though the home screen widgets are fine.
I'm finding the phone a little...difficult to get used to. The iPhone was far simpler and easier to set-up when I first got it. Concerned I made the wrong choice...

Thanks 2bad,
I tried with pop again and selected retrieve email instead of notify about email. And now it works even when e-mail accounts is not connected, thought I had tried this before but apparently not. So it seems like this is an issue only with IMAP. And about Message about e-mail, which I now think is only confusing. You get a message about new email when configured for automatic retrieval, but not when configured to recieve message about e-mail. I leave it at that.
I still think ProfiMail adds quite a lot of value, working IMAP and everything but it is also quite expensive. I now got 30 day trial so we'll see which one I stick with after that.

Anyways, if anyone has a link to set up hotmail on my phone that they would like to share with me, I would be happy.
Then I wouldn't have to have emoze running in the background using up RAM.

The built in default mail client does not work. For what you want to do, you will have to use the Nokia email client via the website instead and then place the icon on the home screen- it works with Gmail and, no issues with mine. That's about the only thing on my device that actually works- all else is a joke.
