N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

I have my nokia N97 almost a week now. This morning opera mini froze and I couldn't turn it off so I removed the battery. After reinserting the battery and turned the phone on I got the White screen of death (WSOD), just a white screen with the word nokia on it. I tried to boot it without the simcard and also waiting 30+ minutes before reinserting the battery. But I still have de WSOD...

Do I have to keep it on to drain the battery or are there other methods to fix this problem. I don't feel like sending it to Nokia because I have to wait more than 2 weeks before it's fixed...

The past 2 weeks I have used it intensively, installed a lot of apps. Put 300+ songs on it and and some movies. I had the email widget on the home screen, I heard that's one of the problem on other forums...

Any ideas how I can boot up normally....

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

WOW this really worked!!!

I pressed and hold the call and end button then turn the phone on. The phone seems to wordk normal again.

Any idea what the problem could be??? Is it the email widget or do I have to reinstall opera mini or maybe an overheating problem?

 Anyways thanks a lot

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

i think it is most likely the numerous firmware bug issue and its great instability that causes all these crashes and crazy behavior with out phones. phones do have a tendency to get warm with intensive use talking, surfing, wifi etc. now if you think that is does get too hot it might not be a bad idea to go to nokia care and have them have a look at it and determine wether it is behaving within thier norms.

Nothihing new, this "white screen of death" has been happening on every nokia symbian phone going back to the original 6600 in around 2004.

Formatting the NV memory has always solved the problem.

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

But how do I format my cellphone if I can't even see what's going on in the screen? My screen is just white and it stays that way, no mater what button I touch... I've tried the backspace, space, shift, on-button combination and the red button, green button, on-button combination but neither work. Could it be because I have an N97 Mini?

I've also tried removing every single loose piece on my phone (battery, sim-card etc.) and re-inserting them several minutes and several hours later. I've also connected it to my computer via USB...

Does anyone know anything I haven't tried before?

Oh yeah, I also called Nokia and they told me to take it to a care point, but I can't really do that right now because Holland is covered in a thick layer of snow and most trains and buses are out of service for the next couple of days :smileyfrustrated:

I have the same problem as you with Nokia N97 mini. All I can get is a white screen. Were you able to solve it in the end?

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

[ Edited ]

I just found a solution to fix the WSOD without a hard reset.

http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?p=2965100&posted=1

I already use it 3 times and it worked everytime... the only poblem is you need to have a charger with you.

If I turn off my N97 I get the WSOD :smileyfrustrated: so this is a good method to fix it.

BTW my N97 has firmware v2.0 now.

I hope it will work for the N97 mni as well...

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

WSOD seems to be firmware rather than a actual hardware issue.  So replacing your handset would be a waste of time as za new handset would still have the same firmware and thus the same potential problems

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

Hi all.

I've had an N97 for some months now, and also upgraded it to firmware 2.0 when it came out. All was fine, until one day I rebooted it, and yep, there it was - the infamous WSOD. I got very angry of course, I knew it wasn't the hardware, even though the support guys kept claiming it, but in that case they should recall all N97's. They didn't have an answer for that, obviously.

Anyway, I have found a solution, that works for me everytime the WSOD comes up. It goes like this when WSOD keeps coming up:

1. Pull battery and re-insert it.

2. Power up the phone by holding the "Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" and wait 30 seconds or so.

3. After the wait the phone should come up normally asking for the SIM passcode and everything is fine.

"Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" is a sort of "soft reset", it keeps all the installations and everything as opposed to the "hard reset".

Hope this helps, and let's all hope that Nokia QA start testing their smartphone software with a little more care. I cannot imagine that normal people would live with such blatant bugs.

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

Hi Nokia,

It is just a work around so that we can get on with our life. So many user has

contributed their valuable time to come up this solution. But it is not a acceptable solution

at all.

Please show your respect by taking away the "accepted solution" and

really come up the real solution which is acceptable by us.

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

Hi again.

I found another, even more effective (although still temporary) solution from another forum (ipmart). It seems to work every time in all WSOD cases - my phone is N97 firmware 20.0.019. It requires the charger, here goes:

All you need is:

N97
Charger

Follow these steps:

- Turn off your phone.
- Insert charger.
- Remove charger right after screen lights up.
- Wait a couple of seconds till screen turns off and just after that press power button.
- After standart vibration notification just put your charger in.
- VOILA! You can insert your PIN again and the phone boots normally!

This works for me every single time the WSOD problem occurs :-)

So NO MORE hard-resets! :-)

Of course it is still really bad that Nokia doesn't have an official fix for this yet, since every normal user would propably never try things like this, and hence will be forced to deliver the device to a service shop with subsequent hard-reset as a result, which just plain sucks.

Regards,

/Henrik...

WSOD
Hard Reset

The combination is:

Shift + Space bar + Backspace + Power your phone

I am using this method for almost a month and it seems that this is only one way to boot up my N97.
It would be nice to hear if this method works for you

My solution to yesterday experience

What I have done:

1. Switch Off Nokia N97 by pulling out the battery

2. Pull out the SIM CARD and Memory Card

3. Switch on The Nokia N97 without SIM AND MEMORY CARD

4. Then do the Factory Settings by going to phone menu options because by this time WSOD will be over.

5. Then Insert the SIM and restart it.

6. Again Switch Off the same and insert Memory Card.

7. Switch on again and restore settings as backedup whether in your PC or memory card to get last settings.

Re: N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

I found a quick work around to the dreaded WSOD on the N97 without having to use a power supply.

1. Remove the battery from the N97

2. Put battery back into the N97.

3. Switch the N97 on.

4. Remove the batttery again as soon as the screen turns white.

5. Put the battery battery back in.

6. Switch back on - wait for a minute or two and hey presto it will come back to life!

Stoopid phone?!! ;0)
