Joe.
I hear what you say, but what about the people calling you? Isn't it cheaper for them to call you on Skype, than the alternative for them? What if they're calling from a landline? How does all that work?

With Skype on your mobile, you’ll always know when your friends are online and you can call them for the cost of a local call (or use your inclusive minutes from your mobile plan). Calling with Skype is only available in Australia, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo), Chile, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, New Zealand, Romania, Poland, Sweden, the United States and the UK.
Call Skype contacts
The standard cost of a local or national call on your mobile (or via your inclusive minutes)."
Oooh great stuff, I might as well just make a normal call then! Skype lite is complete rubbish..i want FREE skype to skype calls not to be charged for them! This is where the N97 version of skype was supposed to come in and give us a proper client.

I saw this as well but I am trying to figure out why would it cost if you are on wifi or have a 3G connection. To me it would dropping out of a PS network into a CS network back into a PS network and then billing you for this. If you are on wifi, and the other end is on Skype via wifi or 3G or whatever, it would be a Skype to Skype call which should be free.
Oh, we can thank Nokia for caving to the operators about Skype. Best bet is Fring or Nimbuzz for VoIP calling at the moment.

When Skype Lite came out I was duped into using it also. As I understand it Skype Lite places a standard call through your phone to another skype user and charges you at the cost of a landline call using an online number. It all depends where the person is calling you, if a landline is calling you in another country it can be cheaper for them as opposed to paying the standard rate for an international mobile call. It does not use WIFI or 3G and places the call via standard means.
Have a look here mate http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/ their explanantion is better.

If this is remotely true, the person that posted the link to this download could be in for a very, very, very rude awakening at the end of the month. It would mean that he would pay local calls tariffs as well as possible data tariffs, not to mention his Skype minutes. Ouch.....

Joe.
Thanks for the link. I followed it to the forum where you posted. It gave me the best laugh I've had in ages.
I remember when Skype first appeared. Making free internet calls was revolutionary. They saw a problem and came up with a solution for it.
Now, with this Skype Lite nonsense, they seem to have a solution looking for a problem to solve. And not finding one. Most people in that Skype forum confess that they just don't get it. Skype just isn't Skype any more.
It's the "Emperor's New Clothes" story. nobody (at Skype) wants to admit the obvious, that Skype Lite doesn't do anything anybody wants. Everybody is incredulous that it doesn't do the one thing which made the very Skype name - MAKE INTERNET CALLS.
Who needs it.

I just choose the option download now and entered my international phone number to which an SMS was sent which is what I always have done on my Nokia devices N95 8Gb, N96, etc.
I attach a picture of my home screen and a picture of the Skype client running on my N97.
On my home screen are several interesting apps that operate perfectly on the N97:
SW shortcut panel #1
1) The blue icon with the flag is WeGolf which is the best mobile phone GPS software for golfers. It allows instant downloads of courses and give distance to any point on the course (www.wegolf.com.au)
2) The green icon with the a is Audible which allows me to listen to ebooks (www.audible.com)
SW shortcut panel #2
3) First icon is the Skype client (http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/)
4) The second icon is WorldMate which I find superior to World Traveller and most of their services are free.

One more thing regarding Skype.
I'm in Australia and my phone is on a plan from Optus. My plan includes 3Gb of data and no charges for calling any landline or mobile phones throughout Australia regardless of how long the call is - the plan is a flat $129/mo and also includes your choice of phone if you take the plan ($99 - 1 Gb data or $129 - 3Gb data).
I own my phone outright and pay for the service monthly - $129 even though I may have $800/mo worth of calls listed. They will give me a monthly credit since I don't have a phone.
Skype dials a number and connects - without any further charges. The Skype java client works perfectly for me.

mpierce, thats probably because that the skype call is being counted as a landline call which you must be getting billed for or it is using up free minutes within your package. As sapporobaby says its realy nothing more than the Skype to go service.
Im affraid its the bitter truth gentlemen, its nothing but a horrible incarnation of skype...a grotesk money making scheme! If anyone is still in doubt here have a look at the skype forums, needless to say people are hoping mad. I was also made aware recently by some else on this forum that Skype for the iPhone will make calls via WIFI but not 3G, chat and presence works via OTA.
I did use Skype Lite only for adding other Skype users as Fring cant do this yet. For years there has been talk of Skype for Symbian in the works but has never been released for obvious reasons as it would finish the networks almost over night, this is why Nokias announcement that the N97 would ship with a preloaded (proper) Skype client caused such a storm with many networks here in the UK refusing to stock it.
