I also have this issue, obviously a nokia firmware issue. The only thig I have found is that if you power off your phone or remove the battery this issue arrives. But if you play a music file to access the second drive in the memory it allows it to work correctly.
so it appears you need to have accessed the music library or have the desktop widget NOT showing "go to music" for customised ringtones to work.

Actually it seems to happen to me when even the widget does not display "Go to music".
The "profile ringtone" was replaced by the dreaded Nokia tune (FW 21.0.045).
The N97 just appears to be a major lemon. There are so many issues with it that have yet to be addressed, of which the ringtone problem is not even close to being the worst. The frequent hangs and freezes are far more annoying.

I have the same Nokia Ringtone shame. I have two songs I use in music but randomly the phone uses the faux-pas standard ring tone. How embarrassing. Thinking of iphone but know it is inferior in many ways. Worried about a new nokia as this one seems poorly designed!
Any answers gratefully received.

I've had my N97 mini for less than a week and thought I was going crazy. I'm experiencing the same Nokia Tune issue and it's driving me insane! I created a nokia account just so I could vent my frustration. Please Nokia fix this problem, I can't take it much longer ![]()

Hi - I've had a N97 mini for 2 weeks now and occasionally get the truly awful Nokia tune when someone rings, as described by many users above.
I've read all the posts on this forum and from that I conclude that:
- The problem is common with n97s (no matter what Nokia say!) and as yet there is no satisfactory solution.
- It would seem to be the cause of too much demand on phone system resources, due to having apps open, large images etc (not impressed Nokia! And where are you - didn't you read the "i-phone solution"?! You're losing customers by the hour!).
- So there's no one quick fix and I'd suggest trying different things to correct the problem on an individual basis; it will depend on what personal set-up/applications you've got running.
Thought I'd post this so anyone new (like me) didn't have to read all 9 pages of comments (unless they really want to).

Where is what i've tried:
1)
Go to settings - phone settings - sensor settings - Inversion control
unthick call and alarm option
Save
2)
Go to settings - Profiles
go to all profiles and replace where "nokia tune" is selected as tone.
Firmware:
21.0.102 RM505

Nokia shame on you because you still haven't fixed this biig problem although soo many people are complaining about it.
I still also have this problem and looked soo many forums without a solution!
I have used WMA, MP3 and 3GP, stored them on Phone Memory, Mass Memmory and Memory Card. I have made them full version, cut down versions of the songs, yet the problem still exists. If no-one has called for a while the first call normally comes through as Nokia Default ringtone, calls after that are the correct ringtone. Leave a while again and back to Nokia. This is also irrelevant of the contact having an image assigned as previous posts suggests this could be a problem aswell.
So Nokia; do something about it or this will be my last nokia phone!!!
