N97 Question

Hi all Just a quick question, am with Orange and every time I phone up to check on my account am asked to enter a couple letters from my password but I can't figure how to switch to alpha keys coz it's the numeric keyboard that's on screen, problem is even if I try to key in the letters using the physical keyboard it doesn't work. cheers

Re: N97 Question

It's not asking for letters.. its more simple.. and designed to work with normal handsets with 0-9 * and # buttons with letters on them..

if it asks for the first letter of your password (which is apple), you'd press 2.. because on a regular phone 2 is also [abc]

Likewise if they wanted the last letter you'd press 3.. because 3 is [def]

Why Nokia didn't put the letters on the on screen dialer keypad I have no idea.. they did on the N900.. I found it incredible irritating as I need to enter many different codes in this way..

I did notice that they managed to put the rediculous globe icon on the 0 button, though!

This may be fixed in a later firmware, though.. I'm miles behind so don't know

Re: N97 Question

Hi

I'm on orange too, and for the life on me i cannot remember where the letters are on the dial pad, however, if you just hold on long enough the recorded lady gives up trying to ask you for your password letters and puts you through to customer services anyway :smileyhappy:

Cheers for the reply but that doesn't work if I press and hold down "1" to try and get "a" all I get is 1111111111 and so on.

Like @angiepea, all I do is hold on until an operator answers. Maybe one of the reasons Orange don't support the handset. Is the N97 mini designed the same?

Re: N97 Question

It won't appear on the screen.. it's not interactive like that..

if you press 2, the tone for "2" gets sent to orange.. orange recognises you pressed 2 and thinks.. that means the 1st letter of their password must be a b or c..

all you see on your phone is "2"

The problem is, you can't see the letters on the keys (like you can on say an N95.. or any other N series phone) so you have to remember them..

Will give that one a go when my phone arrives hopefully today but I doubt it'll work as using the physical keyboard and keying in the letters always fails.

Re: N97 Question

What's not to work... I think you're expecting some magic where you can enter letters on the screen of your phone.. it is far more simple than that..

Imagine you had a regular desk phone..

If you wanted to send "a" as an answer to the letter question, you'd press 2.. because a is printed on the 2 button

If you wanted to send "b" as an answer, you'd also press 2. since b is ALSO on the 2 button

A desk phone doesn't even have a display and it would still work!

The thing that is stopping you is knowing what letters are printed on what buttons.. If you had another phone (like an N95) you could look up the correct number then press that number on the N97 and it would work..

Re: N97 Question

That's if you weren't using T9, though!!! With T9 it'd be single taps.. 43556 == hello..

This isn't about being accurate, though.. it seems to be an American thing too..

"Need a bed? Phone 1-800-Matress"

Now what does that actually mean: It means you dial:

18006287377

62877377 == matress

not

6 2 8 777 33 7777 7777 (which would be multi-tap.. that would be a terrible phone number :smileywink: )

Look on a regular phone and you'll see that m is on 6, a is on 2, t is on 8 etc...

this is the same technique orange are using.. no multi

Thanx for taking the time out to explain the whole thing, my problem was after a couple of times trying to key in the letters by pressing 2 for a and os on, it didn't work and the reason it didn't work is cause I was using the wrong password. So I figured like you put it the system was multi tap.

I feel like a right fad right now but hey ho....

Thanks again matey

Re: N97 Question

So after all the discussions of the Orange password letters system works, did anyone find a way to make the letters appear on the numeric pad when you enable the keypad during a call?

I'm on Orange, and have the latest V22 firmware, and it still just shows 1,2,3,4 etc on the keys, which means unless I am very lucky and guess correctly, I end up having to wait until I get it wrong a few times before I get an operator.

I really is a stupid thing for Nokia to miss - Then again isn't the N97 just a collection of little screw ups.
