N97 Problems - Help Needed

Hi.  I was hoping someone could shed some light on the problems I am having with the N97.  So far I have had 3 of these handsets since my contract with Vodafone started on 1st July and quite frankly, Vodafone customer service is appalling.  All 3 handsets I have had have had the faults listed below but I seem to be getting nowhere with Vodafone about them so it seems Im going to have to fix them myself.  Here goes with the faults......

*   Key lock slider is slow to respond.

*   Phone in general works very slowly

*   Applications take 20-30 seconds to open, even standard ones that come inbuilt on the handset

*   When typing text messages, I can tap the keys on the screen to type the words, then put the phone down and watch the letters appear ever so slowly on the screen about 20-30 seconds after I have tapped them in.

*   Calls are dropped mid conversation, even with minimum half signal

*   Phone freezes, then resets itself.  On restarting, all messages are deleted and email settings wiped.  I have tried looking back to c: (I store my SMS on e: and don't have f: which is the memory card slot) and they are not there either.  They are just totally wiped from the handset.

I have read about firmware v12 being available but when doing software updates, either over the air or using software updater on the PC, I am told that I am on v11 and that is the most up to date.

If anyone can help with any of these problems, then I would love to hear from you.  Maybe you could also tell Vodafone too because they openly admitted to me just this afternoon that they knew nothing about the software versions applied to the phone.  So much for "technical support"!

TIA

Re: N97 Problems - Help Needed

hi, im with voda just move from t-mobile after 12 years got the n97 and ive had to sent it back due to poor signal its so bad that it drops calls and you have to wait for the signal to come back which takes forever im forever calling voicemall due to no signal which is costing me money when i was in the voda store they told me that a lot of n97 are coming back with problems 3 other customers while i was there one guy said he was on his 4th n97 for the same problem. As for the v12 update i think you have to wait for voda to release to  its customers before to can update it as for your other problems read some of the post maybe your fix some of them if not your have to sent it off to be repaired.

Re: N97 Problems - Help Needed

Blimey, it must be bad if you are getting worse signal on Vadofone than you did with T-Mobile!  Ive had 2 contract on T-Mobile and their signal is pretty poor where I am.

Good to hear Im not the only one who is having problems with an N97.  I think I will pay a visit to the nearest Vodafone store soon and set up camp in the shop until they sort out my problems.  Im absolutely against them repairing my phone though, purely because the one I have now (my 3rd) is a reconditioned phone that has apparently been through all the tests and checks to make sure its working, and it obviously isnt.  I dont want to waste time and be without a phone for however long, only to get a phone back that has all the same problems I sent it off with.

Im really pinning my hopes on the v12 update fixing my troubles but to be fair, if it doesnt, then having 3 phones all with the same faults suggests that Nokia have made yet another lemon.  I will never have another Nokia, and will definitely not take another contract out with Vodafone.

Firmware V11 should fixed that unlock slider.

My suggestion is; if you are not using that phone heavily yet. Quickly run to your Nokia Center and have them reformat/replaced the phone.

Re: N97 Problems - Help Needed

Im already on firmware v11 as I said.  I also said that Ive already got a phone thats been "repaired" and the 2 handsets that I had previous to that were brand new, sealed in the box phones.

You mention Nokia Centre though.  Where are these?  Ive never seen one in the UK.  As my contract is with Vodafone, dont I have to see them?

Re: N97 Problems - Help Needed

Ive been told too on the phone by some Voda staff that I can swap phones.  Only some offer it though though and some have said I must get a repair and be without a phone.  I think it depends on what mood the Voda person is in because I get different answers from them everytime I speak to them.  Its so frustrating!

I'll try CW.  Theres quite a few near me so hopefully one will be able to help me out. Ive also been given a hard reset code from a user on another forum that Im going to try.  Ive been told it removes all apps and settings and gives just the basics needed to work the phone.  From there I can do a clean install of all the apps etc that I need.  Maybe that will cure my problems?  Its got be worth a try - Ive tried everything Voda are prepared to do!!  So much for their so-called customer service.  They really are useless, rude and ignorant.

Re: N97 Problems - Help Needed

i went to the voda store in bluewater and they have been very helpful and while my n97 being repaired ive been given a loan phone so ive not been without a phone ive would not have left the store without a replacement phone. However i dont think they will be able to fix the problem as i think its the internals of the phone so i think all n97 will be the same but i have to go along with what they say until i have had 3 phones then i will be kicking off but its not voda fault its nokias so will have to wait and see.

Re: N97 Problems - Help Needed

To be fair I have a spare phone at home thats open to all networks so I always have a spare phone.  However, Im already on my 3rd N97, so I think that the fault lies with the N97 itself.  My contract is with Vodafone though, not Nokia, so I have to deal with Voda.  Their customer service being complete and utter **bleep** means that my blood pressure is going through the roof and now Im like a dog with a bone.  Im not letting this go.
