My power button has stopped working. It will not turn my phone off. To turn the phone off I have to pull the battery out, and put it back in. The phone then just turns on automatically - which is good, I suppose, since the power button doesn't work.
Why do I even need to turn the phone off, you may ask. Well, it needs rebooting at least 2 or 3 times a day to fix freeze ups, bad widgets etc etc.
I have even tried reinstalling the firmware, but no joy.
Any ideas?
God, this phone is poor. I mean, come on. Even the biggest Nokia fanboy (and I've been using them for over 12 years) has to admit it's plain DIRE. I really regret buying it now. Not a week goes by without a big problem. But, I digress, can anyone help with my problem?
Thanks!

well if your button is not working it is a hardware issue and only nokia care can assist you with that.
are you on the latest firmware version v12...? did you try to update your phone?

"hard rest: While pressing “delete”+”spacebar”+”ctrl” switch the phone on. It will delete your phone memory drive but not your “Mass Memory” drive."

The power button isn't working. Let me know how exactly I am supposed to 'switch the phone on'.

You've been given a couple of good answers, given your request "Any ideas?".
Yesterday my power button "stopped working". I solved my problem, in the end, by changing the battery. I have a spare battery. With the one battery in the phone, the phone would not switch on when I pressed the power button. I changed the battery for a freshly charged one, and the phone switched on ok when I pressed the power button. I then charged the first battery via a separate cradle charger. Later, I replaced the battery with the first one and it started fine.
As radical said, if the problem is a hardware problem, then you need assistance from Nokia (unless you expect help from a power switch repairer who happens to read this, and intend to repair / replace it yourself - unlikely).
Harrios offered you the only kind of practical help you are going to get from these forums. This examined the alternative possibility that the power switch itself may not be faulty. In this case (kind of similar to myown experience) he offered you a way of applying lateral thinking to the problem. His solution involves resetting / bypassing a possible software lockup / corruption somewhere, and offers you you hope that your phone may not be actually broken, obviating the need to send it to Nokia.
Both replies to your request for ideas were well thought out, and deserve to be read with the kind of thought that went into the replies.
Did you try Harrios suggestion
If that didn't work, then maybe another suggestion will be forthcoming. The process of elimination is the computer problem solving way.

I am having the exact same problem....
My phone's battery was low so I went to sleep and let it die, so that I could fully recharge it the next day. However, the next morning I plugged it in and it would not turn on. Eventually I left it for a while and still nothing. I then started reading around on how I could fix it but nothing worked. I tried the "4-finger-salute" but it did not work as the Power Button was not responding either. Eventually my phone just turned on after I inserted the battery. The power button did still not work though. I performed a reset *#7370# and that did nothing. I removed my Sim Card, removed my memory card, I tried connecting it to my pc. Nothing. I am on FW 2.0. So now I am in the same situation as alex here, where I had to remove my battery to turn it off, and as soon as I put the battery back in it would vibrate and turn on. However, my phone is now dead and I cannot get it back on.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

Maybe can try with power adapter on and see whether the phone can switch on anot. Battery power is too low.
I mean try hard reset with power adapter plug in.

Came on here looking for a solution, I have a similar problem
My n97 was turned on but the power button wouldn't work to turn it off, reading the posts I'm thinking it's a hardware issue.
When I disconnected the battery to turn the phone off it turned straight back on as soon as the battery was plugged back in, so maybe the button is just jammed somewhere inside. It's stopped doing it just now after few days, now I can't turn it back on!
There's an alarm set so I think there should be an option to turn it on if that goes off tomorrow morning...
Nevermind it's just turned itself back on again, I think I'm gonna do hard reset and take it back to the shop for a service, damn slide button snapped months ago too!

I have 3600 slide. Its volume up button wasnt working (though volume down button was working). so i decided to restart it when i found that power button also wasnt working.then i turned it off by removing the battery. and its not switching on.
What should I do?

I agree, every day another problem.
One day problem with touchsreen, one day with earpiece, one day with power button. And regulary problems with soft!
Fake n97 works best than original! Why Nokia???
