N97 Phone Memory full?

I have had my phone since Saturday, so not long at all, and already Im getting constant errors to say the phone memory is full.  I have about 400k free.

I have now changed my msg location to save to the Mass storage and deleted all previous messages from phone memory, and cleared the web cache.  I have installed around 5 apps i think, like a game, the photo browser updated ovi maps and a twitter app.

If you go into the File manager on the phone and goto Options--->Details---Memory while viewing the phone memory i get this break down:

73MB Memory in use

456kb Free Memory

411B Calendar

23KB Contacts

10KB Message

0B Images

0B Sound Files

1840KB Video Clips

31KB Documents

6650KB MIDP apps

8923KB SIS applications

56MB Other Files

Can anyone explain what could be using all this extra memory and how to resolve this??

Cheers

Re: N97 Phone Memory full?

1:  Install new firmware (if available) using Nokia software updater

2:  Install updates from Nokia from phone's SW Updater utility, especially the C: Phone Memory Update

3:  Delete any apps you don't want

4:  Download and install to E: any app you want to update that you've kept on your device (Accuweather etc) Make sure you set OVI Store to install to mass storage (from the Ovi Options>Account>Settings Menu

5:  Set Messaging store to E: via Messaging>options>settings>other

6:  Calibrate touchscreen

7:  Clear your personal data from Browser menu regularly (daily if necessary)

8:  Reboot on occasions to keep it running happily (my personal advice)

On your phone, Menu>Applications>SW Update.  It's a green square with an arrow on it.

Re: N97 Phone Memory full?

Is the best way to remove applications via the Nokia Application Installer? Ive tried removing Google maps and Nokia maps through it and it says it cant delete the application.

I cant believe im getting these errors as sometimes i cant even use the phone or get a text because it says its out of memory!  and theres like nothing i can delete.

Also doing a software update there is no option for the memory update, so i must already have it...

Re: N97 Phone Memory full?

The Installation utility is probably the best thing to use to remove apps, but you can use the menu to delete apps too.  Some applications are hard-wired though and currently cannot be removed, Boingo, Joiki Spot and Qik for example.

If the program isn't listed in the Installed Apps utility then chances are you can't remove it.

Re: N97 Phone Memory full?

no secrets i just try to avoid junk on my phone and all junk that i need i store on e memory unless i have no choice as in boingo, jaiku and qip apps that unfortunately came with this bloody phone. just like i am religious about rebooting my phone at least weekly, but with n97 is more like daily. i am religious with ram management and disable everything i don't need.

There are some things you can do to manage the C memory better/phone memory.

1. Clear your browser cache often

2. set different message allocation ( if you have not done so already)
messaging- options- settings- other ( set it to 999, and e memory)

3. Go to OVI store (app on your phone) and change that memory allocation for most apps.
opitons- account- settings- installation preferences

4. Remove Facebook, Accu Weather, Bloomberg, apps from the C drivve and reinstall them via OVI store and place them in the E memory/mass memory

NOTE: If you are using Nokia Messaging application, it can only store data on the C drive so keep that in mind

NOTE: RAM is another issue with N97. Don't keep too many apps running at the same time as it will run out of RAM and either close all applications on the spot or crash the phone and result in restart.

BETTER RAM management : Here are some things to consider

also consider investing in the best taskman 1.99$ in the ovi store or y browser (free) to manage your ram and all the apps that are runnig on the phone that you might want to close if you are not using them.

http://www.drjukka.com/YBrowser.html

now y browser is free, it has a great amount of stuff you can do with it, but it is not as easy to use as best taskman and it does not look so pretty- that is if you care about looks over function.

i practice what i preach and manage to have my phone up and running rather well. i have no major issues and on v12 it is actually a fairly stable phone that is until you install some apps that make your phone go bunkers once again.

Re: N97 Phone Memory full?

You don't even need to uninstall the old apps from C: before downloading and installing newer versions on E: from Ovi.  Installing new apps to E: will remove the old one from C: in the process.  It's one less thing to have to do each time you download and install an update.

Radica24, your tips are great, and you do a lot to help people around. So kudos to you.

But I contest that "up and running rather well" and "no major issues" is not something I would say if I rebooted the phone every day.

A phone shouldn't need to be rebooted every day, and that is a big sign that something is not right. The fact that we have workaraounds, which atleast makes it possible for us to use the phone don't mean that the phone is right.

I'd say we have serious problems and issues with the phone. I don't know about you, but for me, I keep with the phone because I don't see any better alternative out there. But I can't say I'm happy with the state of things right now.

(Not to mention all the basic features that I would expect, which the phone don't have.)
