All of a sudden 2 days ago whilst I was using the phone it started to become laggy (well, well...what a supriseLOL)..So naturally I opted to restart it...(BAD IDEA!)...It was then bricked... It would not start up..It was stuck on theNokia flash screen. A hard reset worked (after many attempts). The phone booted up (Sim card / Memory cardremoved) and I decided to reset phone to factory settigs to be on the safe side. After I thought my proble mwasresolved I put my SimCard in it..and Suprise Suprise...the phone was again bricked...
This has happend to me before and I did hard resets..Reinstalled firmware...Formatted Memory..None of this helped.
So I decided to take my phone today to a Nokia care point... He said the engineer would reinstall the firmware..I saidI'd tried many times but he said that they use a "STRONGER FIRMWARE" as opposed to ones that the public obtainusing a data cable.
Is this true?
I also said if he can replace the lens. He said he does not know if the warranty covers the lens and that Nokia areaware of the issue. (He said he will get back to me).
I also said the GPS sucks (he laughed and nodded in agreement) and said a fix was soon to be released and Nokiais aware...
Other points which the engineer and I agreed upon was:-
-**bleep** speakers (Compared to N95)
-**bleep** & buggy software
-**bleep** access points configs
-**bleep** photo browser
-**bleep** gps
-**bleep** UI
-**bleep** lagg
-**bleep** battery life
-**bleep** lens scratching issue
-**bleep** transition effects
-**bleep** speed of auto rotate
-**bleep** browser (it likes to crash often)
I'll update the post with other **bleep** stuff soon.
Look forward to reading your reply's
Thanks.

oMg...I never thought c.r.a.p.p.y. is a bad / swear / rude word..
My apologies . I just wanted to portray my negativity towards Nokia. Oh well I will use another word next time.

Hi mate. Thanks for the quick reply.
I have not got my phone back from the care point as of yet. The manager said come back in 1.5hours..but I knew this wasn't going to be the case so I opted to ring him at 5.15pm and he informed me the engineer will look at it again. Now I do not know of this means there "STRONGER FIRMWARE" failed to install and he is trying something else or he has not got around to doing the reinstall.
As you and the fellow Nokia users in this forum are in the know how and are expets I wanted to ask if this "STRONGER FIRMWARE" exits and has anyone had this done and solved there problems?
Cheers guys.
Your help is much appreciated.

Hey mate. Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes sir that is all I want. A working phone. Hopefully future firmware upgrades solve the laggyness issues..
If (I am slightly hoping) that they can't fix it then they replace the phone with a new one. If they can't do htis I may break the phone and claim via insurance..sell the phone bnib and buy something else...but lets cross that bridge at a later stage lol...
Do you think I should push for the lens to get fixed ASAP or wait for an announcment from Nokia regarding what to do?
Cheers mate

They're not exactly putting a stronger firmware onto your handset, it's the exact same firmware that is available to customers.
What he is talking about is the method in which the firmware is flashed to your handset, the method they use is a lot more stable, quicker, and the chance of bricking devices is very little. I think it also performs a complete format of the phone's memory (barring handsets such as n95-gb, the mass memory isn't usually formatted).
How do you think so many people get their devices fixed after bricking them and taking to a Care Centre? ![]()

I think when people bag out the n97 (myself included) it needs to be noted that 99% of problems with this phone is to do with the horribly buggy software, I think praise is deserved to the designers of the phone as the hardware is of exceptional build quality (apart from the lens)
I have a very strong suspicion that the software designers and hardware designers have limited communication if at all, and it seems a shame from the hardware designers point of view to see their well designed device get beaten to a pulp on these forums from the shortcomings of the software.
Well done nokia designers on creating a quality peice of hardware, well done indeed.
As for the software designers, shame on you, for making my phone completely unreliable, frustrating and unimpressive.

Great post just2exy you sum up this handset very nicely, mine came back from repair without the lens being fixed, and has sat in its box for the last 2 weeks while 3 try to get me a replacement handset, I've gone back to using my old N95 8Gb as it is rock solid and does what is should do, unlike the N97 which says it can do lots, but manages to do very little and disappoints lots of users without fail.
How many times do Nokia think we should reinstall everything, i've wasted so many hours on this phone i've lost count, they should try product testing before release, if they want to notch testers there are plenty on this forum who obviously know more than any testers at Nokia.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the replies. I have read all / if not most of the N97 threads on this forum as I browse this forum on a daily basis. Each one covers certain problems and it is frustrating to see so many Nokia users (loyal Nokia users for many years and newcomers) having problems that over the years (with Nokia developing so many phones) you would have thought would have been ironed out to some extent.
If I was launching a new phone I would first of all LISTEN to what customers want: -
1. Speed. 2. Technological innovation (May be something new / revolutionary) 3. Stability
The above can be developed using technology already available (I.e. Hardware & OS's that competitors are using).
Nokia have not conducted there market research very well / at all. Did they ever pick up an Apple Iphone to see have 'fast' or 'stable' it is? If it is 'fast' & 'stable' is it down to the hardware (Processor / RAM etc) or the OS (Mac OS) ?
Thus why not include a faster processor or one that is on par with rivals which give some speed and power to the user. Simple isn't it? Ok we all know that battery life comes into play but you can't sacrifice so much processing speed / lack of RAM just for an hour or two of battery power. Power users know that a handset of this calibre is a battery muncher and most people would charge it daily anyway.
Ok enough of my rant. Nokia cannot undo there shabby workmanship on this device but please for the companies sake take onboard user feedback for your next device! kthnxbye
alexeiw123: - you are right. Communication is key and a vital part when it comes to a new product. Departments need to learn to work together. Hardware dept should say "To make the OS snappy / fast / responsive and generally more stable why can't we add a nice, fast processor and more RAM into the equation?
The software dept should say "To take advantage of the nice new fast hardware that the hardware dept has graced us with how can we make the OS / software take 110% advantage of the neat hardware" etc. Surely a company of Nokia's strength can manage this!
fishfingers: - I feel your anger / frustration. I have spent hours and hours reinstalling apps / reinstalling firmware and reformatting mass memory. What a waste of time. BETA Testing is key! Why do game dev's beta test? To iron out bugs and save them hassle in the long run! The N97 seems to have been developed in the space of a week (if that) and released with no thought gone into the product. As you have mentioned so many people on this forum are knowledgeable (take radical24...at over 4000 posts he has helped many and should be considered to become a tester).
If Nokia listened to people and not just there workers, customers would not have to keep phoning Customer care / Visiting Nokia care points and thus in the long run it will save Nokia money! Simple.
Just for the record:-
+The above are my views and not that of any other person / organisation.
+I know that Nokia employees sometimes browse this forum but none of the above is directed at them / to them but the members of this community forum.

Can anyone can explain how Nokia managed to take the S60 V3 OS that works fine and almost without fault and add a few extra bits like touch screen compatibility and a few daft widgets, call it S60 V5 and yet manage to add in more bugs than a Microsoft OS..........defies almost all logic.
