Exactly Fishfingers.. How can you make such a mess of something which worked well before.

Shows that they did not test the software / put any thought into the development.

ok people you consistently  keep forgetting that s60 3rd has had a fair share of their growing pains, it is an aging OS and there is not much more they can do with it as is....hence their venture to try something different. in a few 5th ed. will be just as rocking as 3rd is now but it took years to get it to this place.

[ Edited ]

Hey guys. I picked up my phone from Nokia care today 1 week after I dropped it. If you remember I said they could not fix it so they sent it away to Nokia.

So I took it home after I tested it in the shop nd it was working. Installed all my apps back (ones that insist on installing on C drive). Thank God that my E: was the way I left it. Over 25 GB of stuff on there was untouched. (I thought it would be wiped clean..thats what they said). The phone did seem a lot snappier (was still on V11 though).

After all the apps installed & Nokia maps (which was being stupid) finished... I turned off the phone..put my Simcard in..turned it on .. and guess what...it was BRICKED AGAIN!!!

So after writing a letter to the place of purchase (Nokia retail) they got back to me and said that they have passed on my complaint to a higher level and hopefully they can replace my handset. It must be faulty. (Simfree white N97).

N97 support line & Nokia customer care are no help. The guy on the phone said that all the people on these forums complaining about issues such as GPS / Lenses / Memory are lieing and they can't use the phone. I was really angry at this point. He went on to say "we have 25 of these where I am and they are fine". "As for the GPS you must be in a bad area". I was like listen idiot..you are telling me all over London it's a dead area? My TomTom works fine & my N95...he fell silent....They also said we can't issue replacements blah blah..They said take it to carepoint...I told them I did and it has not worked and what's the point of sending it in when I can do what they do at home (reinstallation of firmware). I have installed firmware many times / formatted mass memory. This does not work. It is really annoying me to the MAX now..reinstalling apps / reconfiguring the phone is not fun every day etc etc

So I just did a hard reset now and it has got back to normal. But why does the phone keep bricking itself when I turn it off?

I'm really p!553d off now.. pardon my French..but there is no other way to put this...and sorry about the long post

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

You know what'd be an interesting survey.. what percentage of people who've had their N97 replaced had an unbranded phone compared to a network branded one.. I've yet to find a scratch on my unbranded Nokia N97 camera lens and asides from a little bit of silver plastic that flaked off the volume up button "bump" mine's been pretty good..

that being said, one of my old Nokia chargers blew up when I charged my N97 using the bundled adapter! oops!

If branded phones are worse than unbranded ones.. that might be something to "request" in the future.. that networks and shops aren't allowed their own versions (with the exception of network locks) at least that way we'd not have many of the problems we're facing!

i think that in terms of build branded and unbranded devices are all the same. the quality of production is all the same, it only changes with the firmware once the phone is deemed as branded vs. unbranded. but that is a software issue not a build issue. the phones are still being manufactured in the same factories under the same conditions.

Radical. As you seem to be in the know.

I don't suppose you have any answers to my above questions mate?

So I just did a hard reset now and it has got back to normal. But why does the phone keep bricking itself when I turn it off?

Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks

hahahahhaha that is a very good question. today i installed three apps from the nokia betalabs

updated maps version 3.3, new communities app and livecast i think

i restarted my device as i always do when i update apps or add new ones and guess what my phone is bricked.....well not really but its is stuck on the nokia white screen and nothing else happens....i take out my memory card (again) battery out and try about three times and it finally boots up the normal way.

i had no issues with the phone and memory card after installing the v12 firmware. but it seems like memory card in combination with the new apps makes my phone crash. i did it with the two of three apps. needless to say removed. i only left myself nokia maps 3.3 to see if it will behave any better. as i was navigating to work tho it did decide to reboot on me and get stuck on the nokia white screen again. there is some bad code written in the apps/firmware both that makes this phone go bunkers on occasions.

so i short i really dont know. but be careful when you install new apps, for that exactly might happen and also if you have memory card, first boot your phone and later insert the memory card

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

Mate that is what happend to me. After installing apps it gets stuck on flash screen :smileysad:

Ieven thought I had a faulty sim.

But the 1st time it happened all I did was use a "restart app" to restart my phone and I gott the white screen.

But this time it is after installing apps.

Do you think I should still be asking for a replacement or just live with this 'bug'.

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

i think its your call. it is evident to me that there is some software glitch and some components not really 'playing nice' with each other hence the crashing. once i remove the apps and reboot life is all good again. the phone behaves fine nad i have no issues. its just when i try to add something new and let me tell you not 3rd party apps. it always happens in my case with the nokia betalabs or nokia maps apps. all other apps install fine thus far and no issues. i also use this freeware app called 'speedy go !"

now it might just be my imagination but when i run it in the background my phone seems even snappier. i would recommend it to any n 97 users.

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

I think I am going to push for a replacement as every time it is stuck on the white screen the only way to use the phone is to do a hard reset and it is a hassle to reinstall all those apps again.

Not cool Nokia. Not cool.

i still believe nokia maps is faulty. I think it was 2 years ago when i bricked 2 E65 in 4 days with it.T-Mobile needed only 2 days to replace the handset each time.

Then i switched to TomTom and all was fine

Mate, I would try making a back up of all your data, everything that you want to keep.

Completely format the phone (including mass memory). Now, when the phone is completely untouched, none of your data on there and all that kind of stuff, see how the handset operates just by itself with no memory card or SIM card inserted.

Assuming this goes well, put your SIM card in and try the phone out, see if it behaves correctly.

Then try adding your memory card (if you have been using one in the past).

Once your SIM and memory card are inserted, does the phone still work well? If it has started to behave irratically, I'd say either your SIM card is faulty, memory card is faulty OR you have corrupt data on your memory card that is causing the phone to malfunction.

A faulty memory card or SIM card can actually prevent the handset from turning on.

Hey after my homescreen froze and then  went haywire I had to reformat my phone... I lost all data and the backup didn't appear to backup. Can I do anything to recover the data or must I hate the phone forever??

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

Sound's like nokia didn't do anything to your phone if they did a firmware install u would lose everything the phone comes back completely wiped,  and no u cant do a firmware install at home like the one they do at there care center sure u download a patch and install it but its not  the full firmware that they install. I took 2 n97 to nokia care both where crashing mine was unusable i also complained about scratched len's on my phone, the other one didn't have any and they updated the firmware and put new lenses in both phones all in one working day i was very satisfied and no more crashing until i put in a different sim card (1Mb 3G card) it would crash randomly every 20 min's so back to my (512Mb 3G sim card) the issue went away  go figure the 1G 3g card in newer!

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

Well , I had so many issues with my N97 & issues with Nokia Care .. I Almost got into a fist fight with one of their Extremely UNprofessional engineers .. But that was one shop " Nokia care " .. I Went to another official Nokia center & they treated me with a decent Customer Respect , changed my lens " included in warranty " & a whole swap of the phone with the claimed " Stronger Firmware " & a new Screen as well after the 1st Nokia Center Messed it up & scratched it .

probs I had at 1st were : Endless Crashes , White Screen , Ghost Background in menus , many freezes , camera freeze "in video recording " ,unable to delete certain files & last was MASS Memory Vanishing to some other galaxy lol ...

After changing Nokia Shops " care Center " , its all fine now , been two months ,no bugs at all & IM a heavy apps user, from wifi, youtube, officered apps , I photo shoot a lot , video also , music listening , msn , text ,emails ... etc ..* I just don't use GPS much*

the 1st Care Center took them 2 months to repair the phone & they didnt ! they ended up handing me the wrong phone once ,& in the end they gave me a scratched screen ..

the 2nd care center took them 3 days to FIX Everything, from changing parts to software issues .

it might as well depend on what they had for lunch , if they had steak , you're safe .. If they had

eggs or tuna .. You're *Bleeped* UP ! :smileyhappy:

I hated this phone so much coz I couldn't use its fun features nor a simple phone call ! After the last fix, I have neutral feelings , IM not crazy about it , its just been working really well .

Hope it will with all of you, coz I really do feel you all with the bugs :/

N97 .. Working or Not , it's still a *bleeing* Rip OFF .

Re: N97 - *Most Expensive Doorstop In My House*

What cr_ap that is, I have just unlocked 2 three handsets (contract expired) I got the numbers and entered the the 30 million digit code and now the N95 8gb and the 6710 are able to accept any sim card voda,  orange etc etc...

Oh and  guess what, it still works with 3 sim cards.... 3 sim cards work with any 3G enabled phone that is locked to the 3 network, or any 3G phone unlocked... it's  there way of not giving you a replacement handset.....
