Heh, I've not only had this problem with both my n97s, but n95 8gb had difficulties finding fix.

iPhone does it instantly. No hassle.

Oh that is a helpful information! Thank you for that! That solves the problem of the thread right away! Why do you bother posting? It is great to hear that your iPhone works great...BUT NO ONE CARES!!!

My N79 does it instantly too. Especially in Google Maps, which uses the same fast wi-fi based positioning as the iPhone. Not that it's any good when you're not in a wi-fi heavy area that's been covered by their survey.
It does sound like Maps is failing to actually start up the GPS. What do you get in the bottom right hand corner? One blinking bar, or scrolling red bars?

You need to take it easy man. I have had 2 N97 and a number of nokias before. If people are getting annoyed with their N97 I feel sorry for them. Indeed I am trying to help. At the moment I am collecting information what N97 didn't and what iPhone does. It will be interesting.

No need for me to take it easy, this is a user-user help board, not your rant playground. I´d prefer if you did your "research" somewehere else...as close as possible to the moon...

It will be boring especially if you continue on an on. We get it. You are not the only one that has had an N97 and an iPhone. Happy now. Start by getting, a clue, a life, maybe go out and see the sun once and a while, then move on. You are not here to "collect" jack but to troll and troll, and troll until someone comes along you can extol the wondrous virtues of your iPhone. Well, I have one too and in many, many ways it falls short of what several Nokia phones can do. Here is an easy clue for you to follow, the iPhone and N97 are not competitors. The N97 is more of a phone while the iPhone is an iPod with a phone stuck to it. Was that too difficult for you to follow?
Time to reset the troll traps.
Show the KUDOS button some love.... Hit that bad boy.... It don't hurt....

Try doing a full reset to the phone, if you haven't already. Dial in the magical numbers *#7370# after you've backed up all your important stuff (contacts, messages, etc.) via PC Suite.
If even a full reset doesn't help at once, do it again for two or three times in a row. No kidding, sometimes the phone needs to be formatted several times before its C: drive works properly!
A friend of mine has seen this same Maps/GPS issue in her N96 and also later in the N97. We haven't tried the full reset tricks yet, but it seems to help in many other weird issues in N97... However, if my advice doesn't help, then the only thing to do is to wait for a (hopefully better) software upgrade or take the phone to a repair shop ![]()
