N97, FW2.0 - the lackluster experience

Like many N97 owners I was waiting for the 2.0 update for months as it was promised to be the "holy grail" of firmware updates.

And finally today it arrived.

But it hasn't solved the problems we were having with this phone. It would have been too good to be true.

Sure, we are getting kinetic scrolling. Wonderful. But it's only working in menus, not within the web browser.

And that also seems to be it. Ok, I can finally find the photos and videos that I took in the gallery. My whole month of October was missing. I could only browse to the photos using the file explorer. Now they are all in the gallery. However, it's taking forever for the gallery to open. 4-5 seconds from tapping the gallery icon until the thumbnails show up, then another 2-3 seconds until the photo shows up after tapping on a thumbnail - and that for each photo in the gallery. That's definitely slower than before.

Then the keylock slider bug, it's still not fixed. I still have to use the slider up to three times to unlock the phone. No wonder my slider came off already once (after 3 months and for a not-covered-by-warranty $25 fix).

Still no Voip. My SIP settings are in there and "registered". No Voip call possible.

Performance of the phone is still sluggish. It sometimes takes several seconds to even get to the menu after pushing the menu button.

And these are my comments just after testing out the new FW for 8 hours.

It's a disappointment, I don't know what else to say.

Weird my gallery is working amazing and much quicker then v12.

Slider is fine & phone is much faster and stable. Not 1 crash.

Re: N97, FW2.0 - the lackluster experience

i'm with androllo. my v2 experience is much better. phone is fast. not one single crash yet.

i'm not sure what you mean no kinetic scrollign in browser... it was always kinetic, and even the menus in the browser are kinetic. i can't see anywhere else that could be kinetic that isn't already! do you mean that it doesn't bounce when you push off the edge?? who cares, you can still flick across a page.

I haven't had issues with the keylock slider since v10 firmware.

photos much improved.

maybe your phone needs a cleanup?

press one of the volume keys to take the phone out of power saver, instead of lock/unlock/lock/unlocking the phone

Re: N97, FW2.0 - the lackluster experience

Another thing I found buggy with the GPS is, when you go into the GPS data section, whenever the phone complains about it not working indoors cos of bad signal, it turns off the GPS and reinitialises the GPS which restarts the whole "fixing" process.

They've also removed the satellite view, so you can't see signal strengths any more. Why they have removed that is beyond me.

Re: 2 SMALL ISSUES WITH N97 V2

i found a fix to the ovi store problem.

point your mobile browser to www.store.ovi.com

there is a link up the top to download ovi client, click on it

log in

download and install.

this is an updated client, why it doesn't auto update is beyond me.

it also adds the ability to re-download payed apps if they are no longer installed (for example after hard reset)

Re: 2 SMALL ISSUES WITH N97 V2

Music refresh gallery issue

Turn off the phone - Remove the Storage Card
Turn on the phone

Turn off the phone - Insert the storage card

Turn on the phone

Now it should do a 'searching for music' thingy.

That worked for me, would have been easier if there was a button on the menu that said 'search for music' but oh well maybe in the next firmware in JUNE

I love my purple screen, 1/2 day battery, sketchy touch screen and $800 price tag - I call it my Lumia 900
