The screen has stopped working altogether.  I have tried turning the phone on and then restarting it but nothing works... any ideas?

take out the bat for a few minutes, put it back in turn on the phone and see if this helps. if nothing helps you need to go to nokia care for assistance. this might be beyond software issues that we can assist with in this case

do you mean the touch screen or is it just blank?

older firmwares  used to do that when the battery was too low.. do you have an external battery charger you ca try a different battery or try plugging in a charger for 1/2 hour ten pull out battery and reboot

I just got a similar problem, and I noticed a small crack inside the screen.  I've been very careful with the phone, considering how much I spent on it, and there's been no sort of pressure applied to the screen.  I have no idea how the crack got in there, the screen just stops responding completely. 

I hope Nokia warranty will cover this without blaming it as my fault.  Its weird, because there's no scratch on top, you just see a very small crack inside when the screen is lit up.  The display is still fully functional, but doesn't respond to touch - which makes the phone useless!!!

yeah mate nokia care is calling in this case. i wish you luck and hopefully they will not monkey around with repairs and just do it for you.

Havent noticed any small cracks, but now that you mention it I did recently hear a slight rattling noise, so it could be that the screen has cracked slightly on the inside.

It started responding yesterday for approx. 6 secs and then it stopped completely again.

had this a few weeks ago , was panicking at loss of phone, turned out the charger was duff and phone was just flat battery

Well I phoned up orange, and they declared it as faulty...they do their usual tests over the phone and then I was asked where I bought it.

I told the guy I bought it from phones 4 u, he gave me a reference code and told me to take it to them and I would get a replacement free of charge.

But this was not the case, phones 4 u refused to give me a replacement and decided to send my phone away for 2 weeks, so the people can try and fix it.  So now im phoneless

2 weeks of my life I will never get back.
