You are probably in editing mode, the mode which allows you to remove, add, or rearrange the content on your home screen. There should be a Done soft key in the bottom right. Click that to go back to the normal screen.

I get this problem occasionally, I find powering the phone off and then back on usually resolves it.
I think it could have something to do with the available RAM (memory), if you haven't already you might want to try increasing the available memory on c: (there are instructions on this forum, search C drive n97 on the forum). I have also noticed that third party themes use 5+ MB of the available RAM.
Hope this helps!

I noticed that when you plug the phone via USB your home screen defaults to the originals icons. Very weird
Any ideas how to solved this?

When you connect in mass storage mode, all applications installed on E: disappear. You can install apps on C: to get around it.

Thanks for the info krisp, at least I know now why this happens. Kudos added
But installing on the C drive is not an option whatsoever, that brings other set of problems, so I rather have the missing icons whilst is connected via USB.

Yeah, C: drive is already filled up with some third party **bleep** you can't uninstall
