BTW, screen resolution for the N97 is 640x360 (16:9), not 640x320 (2:1).
As for the files not showing up, you might want to check the file extensions, that might be causing the problem.

it's very unlikely that n97 will ever have a proper avi support. Some 3rd party software vendor MIGHT (like corecodecs) make a player for n97 but n97 doesn't have enough processing power to decode avi-files without stuttering. It used to be fine to have so little processing power on 240x320 displays but 360x640 on 434 mhz arm without any video accelator - not going to happen - ever!
The native player probably takes use of the phone's dsp and thus is able to decode quite high resolution video. Let's just hope that nokia will ad an avi support to n97's realplayer... Till then we're stuck with encoding videos.
They really should have packed this device with omap3 hw - since it has over 3 times (!!!) more processing power than freescales soc. But since they build it with a budget (it can't cost more than 200 euros to manufacture) we're stuck with **bleep** hw.

I did some further research and it seems that - unlike the n95 - the dsp in n97 can not be utilized to anything but telephony and modem functions.
Good new is that - aparrently - n97's freescale mxc300 has an fpu... Dunno if that can help to decode video though..

I find that hard to believe considering my Palm Treo 650 can do it using TCPMP (AKA) The core pocket media player with a 312mhz ARM processor. I have even underclocked it to save battery life around 200mhz and it played and operated just fine.
Also smart movie even has a version without choppiness today however they have not solved the audio sync problem yet.

n97 has a 640x360 screen. So that's more than twice as much pixels as your treo. Not to mention that symbian ain't exactly a very efficient os.
You really see the lack of power when you hook your n97 to a tv set. It cannot even play it's own mp4's without lagging
Perhaps the device could playback some divx movies utilizing some 50% frameskip. 12-15 fps might be sufficient on such a small screen.
