N96 won't switch on

Hi guys,

Hoping someone can help me...  My N96 won't switch on.  After holding the on/off button for about 3 seconds, the screen goes white, but then turns off again.  The phone does not vibrate and the Nokia logo is not displayed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: N96 won't switch on

Did you try removing the battery and leaving it out for 10-15minutes, and then trying to power on the phone?

Since your phone is not powering up properly, I think you should consider performing a hard reset. Be warned that all data in the phone memory will be lost, on successful completion of the procedure.

Turn off the phone (remove the battery and insert it back if the phone is not powering off also)

Press and hold down these three buttons: Call (Green key), * , 3

Without releasing them, press the power button to attempt powering on the phone. Release the three keys only when you see the shaking hands logo, or the language selection screen.

It might take multiple attempts and nimble fingers to get it right, so be prepared to do it a few times before you finally get it right.

If this doesn't work out, your only option is to take it to a Nokia Care Point.

Good luck

Cheers,
DeepestBlue

Re: N96 won't switch on

Thanks DeepestBlue,

Does the hard reset always work?  As in, can it always performed (not will it always fix the problem).

I can't seem to get the shaking hands logo - but just don't know if my fingers aren't stretchy enough!

Re: N96 won't switch on

your going to need to do the hard reset. The reset can be done as soon as the screen goes white the phone does not need to start up. I had this problem myself, Hope you have backed everything up to nokia suite.
I dont pretend to know everything like some people on these boards i am just trying to help. Its not all about the kudos.

Re: N96 won't switch on

Just to let you know I couldn't get the hard rest working.  Luckily, my phone is still under warranty - so they're trying to fix it now or give me a replacement.

Re: N96 won't switch on

this just happened to me. phone was replaced cos motherboard failed. lost lots of data, music, photos and downloaded programs. such a pain. SO...as soon as you think your phone is slow in switching on. BACKUP, DOWNLOAD AND TRANSFER EVERYTHING YOU CAN. Once the phone doesn't come on at all (took about two weeks for it to get to this stage) you've lost all.

Re: N96 won't switch on

Got my N96 back today.  Apparently they've replaced the circuit board.

Gone through and updated and installed the things I want.  Just a couple of questions though please.

Pressing and holding down the # key no longer toggles the profile between General and Silent.  This was actually very useful.  How can I get this back?

When opening and closing the slide, it makes a Wooosh sound.  Is there a way of turning this of?!

Re: N96 won't switch on

Don't know about the # button.

You can disable the whooshing sound by going to Tools>Settings>General>Personalisation>Themes>Audio Themes>Phone handling events. Disable Close Slide and Open Slide.

Re: N96 won't switch on

Don't do it too often and only when necessary. It won't do any harm to the phone but may result in result is the loss of all your data.
