This is the 3rd time this has happened now so I think worth posting about.
Recently my N96 frimware V30.033 as started locking up while browsing using the s60 web browser.
The phone lockups and a battery out reboot is required. On restart all of my received and sent sms have been deleted. They are stored on the mass memory. The delivery reports are left intact.
The lockups I can live with ... but the data loss is unaceptable.
Has anybody else exp[erienced anything like this?

I've seen the same thing once on my N96,
Again messages stored to mass memory running v30 a crash wiped the messages from memory
Only thing you can do is to restore from your backup

I want to say me too. I got the N96 as an update to the N95 back in November 2008. Despite many firmware updates, I still encountered the occasional freeze, resulting in a restart wiping of all previous messages. The last straw was in April 2009 when it happened again.
Although it is good practice to do regular backups, the fact that the phone can be so unreliable resulting in data loss is never pleasant and is not accepatable.
I have gone back to my old N95 and have been happily using this without any issues since April 2009. I'm naturally disappointed to read that this issue is still occuring, one year on after this phone was launched. I hope someone in Nokia reads this, I've been a Nokia user and fan since the tiny Nokia 8210, this is the first time I have really come across a reliability issue with one of their phones, hence my first post.

If you gave up in April you missed the v20 and v30 updates,
Both of which vastly improved the phone over v12 and turned it into what it always should have been
An upgraded N95
Infiring from one intermittant issue that there is a fundamental problem with the phone is just wrong
Still 2 months after this thread died I have only had the one occurance of this issue and have not seen any other complaints on here,
In fact apart from the last week where vodaphone finaly got round to realeasing its own version of v30 with its own intrinsic problems (that don't affect the generic version) its very rare to see any N96 complaints on these forums
