My N96 keeps forgetting contacts in received text messages.

I know the contact is there and correct, as if the caller phones it recognises them.

The only fix I find when it starts, is to delete all affected messages, then it appears to work again for a short while.

Anyone have an idea if this is a specific N96 bug, or if general, of a fix? Have tried deleting and recreating contacts, but so far the error persists

well i have an idea but not quite Sometimes when you have duplicated the contact let`s say you have one man`s number stored with his name and second time with his surname the phone doesn`t know which contact to show.But you said that when somebody calls you the name is displayed.So this theory may not be the case

Also if the ending of a phone number is the same for example

contact 1: 4478123123123

would be the same as contact 2: 078123123123

so neither name would appear on an incoming text

so in your country you might get that problem with area codes or similar numbers.


Is it happening to every number, or just a few?

yes it is
I bet you have a phone number that is not showing contact duplicated
it is either on Phone and sim
or you have it twice with different names

The NUMBER is in the LOG more than once

I would put money on it

To find a duplicate phone number, (this will only work if you have 2 numbers with 2 separate contacts, not 3)

find the person in your phonebook that is not showing correctly

write down the phone number that is not showing correctly (onto paper or something), and then delete the number in the phone (or change it to 123 or something).

now, ring the number (that you wrote down onto the paper didn't you?) IMMIDIETLY hang up, and then check your phone logs under dialled numbers.

Volla, you have your duplicate person in black and white.

as i said, if there is more than one duplicate, it wont work.

you can deal with that duplicate yourself and then put back the original number.

Right. Lets get this out of the way, so it is clear to everyone.

Once the N96 starts to forget numbers, it forgets EVERY number stored against a contact. There are no duplicates, it started happening all of a sudden. No changes to the handset, no sync with a pc that would have duplicated anything. I still have 163 contacts/details since I got my N96, and all of these were on my N95-1.

All contacts are on phone memory, and there are NONE on the SIM.

I've owned Nokia's for over 11 years, so I think I know about a duplicated contact by now. See Sig.

I can easily replicate this with any number. Say my wife sends a message. It puts her name next to the text. But then after a few texts (replies to and fro etc) all of a sudden it shows her number. Then it will do this for any messages from contacts from that point onwards.

UNTIL, the messages that display numbers from contacts already stored on the phone. The call log is unaffected, so this is how I know that there are no duplicates, besides manually checking BEFORE posting on the forums.

I've asked another N96 owner, and they say they've had this happen once, and only once. Mine's happening every day!

So if anyone can help, with anything other than looking for duplicates that DONT exist, I'd appreciate.

Well an update.

Today all of my inbox, drafts, sent items and message folders have gone.

I'm therefore assuming that the issues were either a symptom or cause of a message store corruption.

So far, everything now seems fine. Just a pain that my last backup was a month ago

[Sorry for ressurecting an old thread, but I felt we share the same problem]

I'm having this problem currently. It's annoying the hell out of me. In order to find out who has text me I need to ring the number so that the contact name come up. How can I fix my inbox and outbox so that they show the contacts name rather than their number. All the numbers are in my phone and none are duplicates or on my SIM (as this person said.) I'm not willing to delete all my text messages to sort this problem.

My phone is still having this problem.. PLUS, now text messages are not coming through. What should I do? Every now and then I turn my phone off and restart it the text messages come through. This phone is so awful it's ridiculous.
