N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Hello everybody

I don't want to complain again about the N96, after one year, I learned to live with most of its problems...

But one thing I really need to sort out is this:

the phone is constantly telling me that my C memory is almost full and that I should place files on other memories.

And that's  absolutely right: When I look in 'file manager' I see that only a few megabytes are free.

But the real problem is that there is absolutely NOTHING I can delete from that disk: the details are:

78MB in use

5128 Kb Free

91 Kb Agenda

177 Kb Contacts

120 Kb Messages

0b Images

50 Kb Sound files

0b Videoclips

38 Kb Documents

0b MIDP-apps

9578 SIS-apps

68 Mb Other files

So, you understand that the only things I could delete is Agenda, Contacts, Messages and Sound Files.  Doesn't matter, as this would free up not even 500 Kilobytes...

All the extra apps I installed are installed on the Mass Memory, so I guess the SIS apps on the C drive are those who were installed with the firmware...

How can I free up space? I really need to free up some space as the phone is really constantly telling me that the memory is almost full.

I had the same problem when I was on holidays in July, and after a few days the phone TOTALLY crashed: and with totally, I mean: Not starting anymore, having to leave the battery, simcard and memory card out for ten minutes, and then restart it.  It took tens of minutes before it worked again then......

Please help me with this memory problem

Thanks

"Other files" could be almost anything, it's any file with an unrecognised file type, so it's probably shrapnel from various applications that have been installed and in some cases they can still linger after uninstallation.

The only really practical way to rid yourself of these is to backup your personal data which you do need and reformat the phone with the code *#7370#.

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

do a Nuke reset. This will fix most of the problems on your device.

To do so, follow the instruction carefully:

0. Back up all of your Data from your phone. Unless you don't want too and can't be bother. Bewarned that this will erase everything from your phone memory. But not your Memory Card.

1. Turn the phone off

2. Press Green button + 3 + * buttons. All pressed and hold at the same time. Then Press the Power button to turn on the phone.

3. Do not let go of the buttons (Gree+3+*) but let go of the Power Button

4. Keep holding until you see the hand shake (2 hands reaching out)

5. Beyond this point, You will ask to select your country. This is it.

All bugs from previous defection will now be fixed. You will have to reinstall what ever you want back.

Hope this help you get your phone back to the usual state.

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

A privous post I posted about Homemedia that eats C: memory.

--------

I had to 7370-reset my N96 (FW: 12) because when I tryed to share my media throu Homemedia and the homemedia application filled up my last 14mb on C:

I thought, something had gone very wrong. And Nokia Care advised me to 7370-reset my phone.

Now when I reseted the phone I did a test.

I noted down how many MB I had left on C: which was 43MB.

I started Homemedia and choose to share all my media, that means all playlists I have and that would result in around 200 songs that will be shared.

Homemedia did the share-process and when it was done I had 39 mb left on C:

Fine, thats ok to me, loosing 4mb due to some databases or library.

Now the thing is comming.

I changed the settings in Homemedia to share nothing.

After the process to un-share my songs have started I notice that the amount of free MB on C: is dramaticly decressing and when the process is done I endup having only 28Mb free on C:

This means that sharing you songs throu Homemedia and then unshare them again makes you loose 15MB from C: (atleast in my case) that you never get back if you dont reset you phone.

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Hi

Thanks for the help so far...

Of course, I know that the problem is the 68MB "Other Files"

If I have a look at my C: drive via the File Manager there are almost no files there, every map is empty.

When I look at it through Y-Browser, I see that particularly the Resource and system folders are full of maps and files...

But I don't want to delete things i'm not sure of.

i did never use Homemedia by the way...

OK, I think I will have to go for the total reset (I HATE it :-)

Can anyone confirm about the "Nuke" reset??

Thanks

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Ok now we are getting somewhere

Check in your map settings which memory you are using

If you are storing maps on the c drive then this is why you are full

Always use the E (mass memory)

I would never go for the multi finger reset unless the phone is totally buggered

the manual reformat should only be used if the phone is full of **bleep** / important settings are tottaly buggered and there is no other way tofix the problem

Unfortunatly there are too many users on here who think that these are magic bullets to fix every problem when usualy some tinkering with the phone settings is advisable first

Try checking where your maps are being stored and if it is set to the c drive move to point at the e

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Hey mr synth...

I stored the whole world :-) on my E drive... :-) so that's not the problem.

something else I was thinking about: Could it be the Nokia Email program that i use to collect my gmail, yahoo and hotmail stuff?  There is no setting at all there to choose a memory.  Then again, I have only got about 100 mails on my phone, in text format... that doesn't make the 68 Mb "other files"....

In the mean time, after my last sync (with the new Ovi program) the free memory on C has been reduced to  4716Kb, that is more than 400 kb less than yesterday.  But these kilobytes didn't come from syncing agenda, contacts, documents or whatever as I checked this... these Kb's are  also "Other Files"

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Nuke Reset is like a factory new firmware installation. When you download a new firmware to update your phone, It will store some thing similar to "Recovery Drive" on the phone flash memory. This recovery drive will be used during the hard software reset, but instead of doing the *#7328# keypad, it will use the Keys Combination, which do a proper reinstallation of the software. It will format the C:\ Drive then rewrite it at an instant and revert any setting back to an out of the box experience just like you did when you reinstall a Windows OS.

There are some differences between "Factory Setting Reset" "Software Reset" and "Hard Reset also known as Nuke reset".

1. Factory Reset is like a system restore point to where the original setting was recorded after the phone firmware had been installed.

2. Software Reset is when do a system recovery to an out of the box experience but it doesn't fully format the C:\ drive, which may result in buggy at some point. But not usually

3. Nuke Reset is when you format the drive and reinstall but this method is the most effective when you want to make sure your phone is cleaned.

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Does the "Nuke/hard reset" erase the 16 gb mass memory on N96? Or is it just C: memory that get erased.

If its only C: that is erased I suggest you backup all your stuff on the 16 gb mass memory and format it. Coz after you have done the reset and starting to re-install all your applications on the phone it could course some problems if old files is still residing on the mass memory.

Re: N96 Heavy memory problem, Please advise!!!

Its Erase C:\ and reinstall OS automatically. Do a back up to 16G memory and perform the NUKE.
