Hi folks,

I'm currently having problems getting GMail to work with my N96.

I have tried POP and IMAP settings and can get it to connect.

The problem is that it gets stuck halfway through on the progress bar where it says "Updating Email".

If I cancel out of it halfway through it does show it managed to retrieve some headers but not all.

If I then try to retrieve one of these emails it gets stuck halfway through on the retrieve email progress bar.

I would prefer to not use the GMail app as its slow and clunky, want all mail to come straight to the handset.

I am connecting via 3 and using 2G GSM mode.

My other Sky pop account works just fine.

Any ideas?

Connect using wifi and try again. I think it is just slow and not getting stuck. Wifi should be faster than your 2G connection.

It connects fine using WIFI but I need to be able to connect outside the house or at work.

I have left the phone for ages and it's still just stuck there with a good signal.

Have no problems browsing web pages and everything so don't see why this should be any different.

If you got into your settings i think it might be under network? you can switch it from 2g to 3g

Yeah, I was trying to avoid that.

Like to keep 2G going while im at work so the battery lasts longer.

I suggest doing at least the first download using wifi as there could be a huge backlog of emails to be downloaded. 2G may be a little too slow for that. However it may be able to cope with all future downloads.

Tried that, infact I cleared out my inbox except for one small email just to test it and the same problem occurs.

For whatever reason Gmails POP mail refuses to work on this handset.

Are you using POP or IMAP? I would recommend IMAP as that is what I use, but I usually use it with wifi and only somethimes with 3G.

Try IMAP with wifi if you haven't already done so.

Yeah, I always use IMAP by default. :-(

I'm gonna go for it and just leave the phone overnight plugged in and trying to check email. lol

I still think it is taking a long time downloading the first lot of emails which probably includes everthing in your mailbox, depending on which option you selected.

Leaving it overnight could sort this out.

I leftit trying to update over night and when I got up in the morning it was still stuck on the same screen. lol Oh dear.

Well, seems for whatever reason Gmail doesn't work with 2G on my handset properly. 

Maybe it's because Three are mainly a 3G network and use Orange's for 2G roaming.

It certainly looks like it. Just to dispel any doubts, why don't you just try it using 3G just the once. I personally use it on wifi most of time and only use it on 3G every now and then when I have to. It never costs that much because I am only dowloading a few emails at a time.

a possible alternative soloution could be to try the Seven Mail beta client for the N96 perhaps? I only suggest it as there is very little setup to complete. You just enter your username and password, and off it toddles to create everything for you.

Got the Seven Mail beta, installed fine without problems.

When it comes to checking actual mail, gets stuck on 0%. 

There is definately a problem with Gmail. Oh well.

Hi

 Delete your email account on the phone and try using the settings wizard which can be found in tools > utilities > settings wizard. It will setup the usual stuff wap,mms then move on to email where all you do is enter your email address,password and a name for the account. It should auto configure it self.

Give it ago and let me know who it goes

I've access gmail using all of the following on an N96 with v12.043 firmware

 - internal email client (imap)

 - nokia messaging (imap)

 - google mail client (from google)

All work fine over gprs, umts & wifi.

I've also removed/recreated the account(s) numerous times with no issues 

I'm using 3UK with "xseries silver". One thought is that perhaps it's your service provider - but I'd have thought that most likely to simply stop you connecting...

Hmmm interesting to know.

I'm also using 3 UK, v12 firmware and on X Series Silver. 

For the Gmail Imap, on phones built in email app, are you using the settings that it sets automatically? Or do you change them at all?

Just had another go but just let the wizard set its own settings.

It connects to the mailbox fine, but when I go to retrieve any email thats where its getting stuck.
