N95 text message deletion?

Is it possible to recover deleted texts on an n95? How far back can i recover from and how many messages can i recover? Would updating software delete messages permanently? What else would cause my messages to be permanently deleted?

If the messages are stored in the phones memory they cannot be recovered after deletion.

Updating the phones firmware does cause all messages and other user information to be deleted (on most models) but it does warn you.
