Re: N95 backup and restore

Probably too late now, but did you use the latest version of PC Suite to back up your phone?

Also, when you did the backup, did you check the log file that the PC Suite backup program creates for any errors/problems making the backup? If no errors backing up contacts were reported, then they should be in the backup.

A second way to keep a "backup" of the contacts is to use the PC Suite Contacts app and synchronize the contacts to a PC that way.

A third way is to use the PC Sync app of PC Suite and synchronize the contacts with, e.g., Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes.

A fourth way is to use the "Memory" app on the phone to backup the contacts, messages, etc., to memory card (and then use the same app to restore them).

A fifth way is in the "Contacts" app to hit "Options" and then choose "Copy" and then "To memory card" to save/export the contacts to to a file on the memory card (and then use "From memory card" in the same menu to do the reverse).

A sixth way is to use the "Transfer" app on the phone to keep it it synch with another phone.

A seventh way is to use the "Sync" app on the phone with a remote, network based SyncML Server.

I use the PC Sync app as my primary means, but I also use the PC Suite backup (Content Copier) often + just in case also the PC Suite Contacts app.

Less regularly I use the sixth way & the seventh never, really.

I suspect all of these are just turning the knife in the wound now, but maybe they'll help you in the future, even if you can't recover from your lost contacts now.

Re: N95 backup and restore

generally, it is OK for restoring to new N95, that is exactly what the restore is supposed to do, you get your data back to phone incase the phone is lost or broken. However, there is no simple way to ensure that the backup file is "good", so i wonder how do you know that it is intact ?

Re: N95 backup and restore

OK, let's try first to find out if the backup file you have is "valid", meaning it has the contacts, sms's files etc. that is expected to be there.

First try to locate the backup file in your PC:

The file extension is xxxx.nbu (if you have used the latest PC Suite to make the backup).

If the backup file is relatively old, the file extension can also be .nfb or .nfc

Normally the default place to store the backup file is something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name, if applicable)\Application Data\Nokia\ContentCopier

If you locate the file, check first that the backup file size is reasonable (I just made a backup of my N95 and it was more than 72 MB), if the file size is only a few kB, it is an indication that the backup file is not valid, something has gone wrong when you made the backup (altough the PC Suite has not warned you about it.)

If you locate the file, you can open the file with for example notepad. You will see that the content is messy, but you can try to use the notepad's Edit - Find with a string that you know , maybe a phone number or first name, so you can see, if your contacts actually are in the middle of the "mess" in the backup file.

Another alternative is this applet that Miksu has suggested to use in emergencies like this:

If you want to try it, you can download it from here:
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/software/Nokia_Contact_Transfer.exe

Let us know if any of this was helpful. If you need more help, please let us know that is the data you more urgently need to "save" from the backup ?

What about the phone ? What is the software version in it ? Type #*0000* to phone to find out.

Is the backup file same language version as is the target phone ? Have you done any resets to phone ? (Check for forum search to check what the reset codes are)

Re: N95 backup and restore

Many ways to back up...

Use PC Suite to synchronize with Outlook or Lotus Notes (might have issues with some fields, multiple numbers).

Synchronize directly with an Exchange server (using Intellisync, Mail for Exchange, RoadSync).

Use PC Suite backup (Content Copier).

Use the backup feature of the "Memory" app on the phone (and then copy the \backup\backup.arc file off the memory card for safekeeping (can only be restored on the same device).

In Contacts, export/save all contacts to the memory card via Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all and then Options > Copy > To memory card (and then copy the files off the memory card).

Re: N95 backup and restore

The three last options of those I listed, will back up multiple numbers and other details of contacts for sure.

Re: N95 backup and restore

I just upgrade my N95 from v1 to v3, since it recommend me to back up my files 1st before i upgrade it, so i back up my files via Content Copier (i got this apps from the Nseries PC Suite) and i succeed upgrade my N95. but now, when i tried to restore my files again with Content Copier, it stuck in "58 % complete - Full backup" and its been 30minutes and it still 58% =(

is it usually takes hours to restore or somethings wrong with my files ?
