Re: N95 Backup .ARC

I completely agree with the request for an application to read or convert files .arc.
I tell you my situation:
My Nokia 5800 that I use for business matters, stopped working. I had some backups of my extensive list of contacts in the memory card in .arc format. I am GNU/Linux user, so obviously I do not use PCsuite.
Then I needed recover urgently my business contacts, and I thought it could open the file .arc from my 5530, which unfortunately did not work. Then install PC Suite in a PC with Windows, and surprise! is not compatible with. arc.
I've been very disappointed with Nokia, I am still unable to recover my contact list..

Sorry for my english, is not my native language.

Re: N95 Backup .ARC

Thank you, but in my case with Noki Trial it's not possible see all my contacts. I have approximately 100.
Has Nokia some similar application to Noki?
If Nokisoft developers could have created Noki, I am sure that the very intelligent people of Nokia also might develop one.

Re: N95 Backup .ARC

While you have my sympathy, the second rule of making a backup is checking that the backup works. Trying to open backup.arc even once before your data was lost would've told you that you can't read it on your PC. Nokia never misled you as to how the function works, so they don't have any legal or moral responsibility for your lost data here.

That said, they really should eliminate it, because clearly a lot of people misunderstand what the function is supposed to do.

As a Linux user I suggest you back up over the air to a service like Google or Ovi Contacts in future.

I continue to eagerly await this lawsuit!

Re: N95 Backup .ARC

My experience with backups is in PC's. When I do a "System Backup" I only intend to restore it in the same PC/device. When I do a "Data Backup", I hope to open and read it on any computer or system and at any time. Obviously Nokia people did not make the .arc for this. Returning to the example of the PC and what happened to me, it's like one day my PC stops working, and never could open or read my "data" backed up in other similar system/computer.
I do not intend to take legal action against Nokia for my data lost, but as a Nokia user for many years, and to many people with the same problem, I ask to Nokia to analyze the situation and try to provide a solution.

PS: @sockatume: I do not know how exactly works, but I do not trust "on air" services to handle confidential information ...

Greetings.
