Largely, what matthew_maude said.
The N900 is an excellent phone because it runs on Linux and this grants it versatility unmatched by either Android or the iOS.
The N900 is easy to overclock unlike Symbian devices and has the ability to run many complex applications.
You can even upgrade to MeeGo on the N900; however, there will be no Nokia support. And this is what's so great about the N900: unlike other OSes, you can do things without the manufacturers permission.
The N900 is probably better suited for a person experienced with and who likes to tinker with software rather than the average consumer who would prefer a steel cage controlled environment such as provided by Apple.
It's not for everybody but the N900 does offer things the iPhone and Android phones don't.
