Hello everyone!
I am new here and looking for any info on the battery life on the Nokia N900 that will be out in October(i think). It is the only thing that is keeping me from getting this phone.
Because lets face it, the features of a phone is pinnacle but when you have wifi on, gps, bluetooth, IMing, texting, heavy web browsing, taking pictures, and taking vids, listening to music, watching vid clips, and of coarse making phone calls during the day the battery is even more essential. Buying a $700 phone that claims a full days use but does last but 3hrs is not going to be worth it. Well at least it has to be on par or better than the competitions battery life.
Does anyone know what the battery life will be like?

No one will know for sure till it comes out, so you will need to wait and see what posts are put here after release.
The factory spec quotes are not real life, they just leave it till it runs out, they don't use it and big screens sap lots of power, if it is anything like the n97 it should last a day easily if used only for an hour or two each day, heavier use will result in it needing a charge

The 770, then N800 then N810 each improved battery life considerably.. the 770 was pretty pants. It wouldn't really last a day left on.. The N810, is pretty good. It lasts a while, but not as long as, say, the N97.. and it uses the same battery!
The N900, I believe, has a smaller battery than the N810/N97. I wouldn't expect much out of the battery life.. but then again, I always charge my phone when I got to bed.. so as long as it lasts a day with a bit of playing / music play back 3g/wifi surfing/syncing and email.. I'm more than happy.
The N900 battery is 1320mAh, where as the N810/N97 battery is 1500mA. However, compared to the iphone3gs' 1290mAh battery, I guess it would be reasonable to expect similar battery performance to the iphone3gs.. a day with light/moderate usage..
On a side note, you can get very VERY high capacity batteries for the N810, just not Nokia originals.. Now, I don't have to state how risky this is (mind and perhaps device blowingly risky) but if money is no object (you might need to buy a replacement device) and you REALLY need this phone to last 2 days with moderate-heavy usage, a 3rd party battery *could* be an option.. but seriously, I wouldn't recommend it..
I've not used a 3rd party battery on a Nokia since the 2130 handset days in 1997?! Just don't see the point.. but for those who really must, not matter the cost, there could be a solution out there

To be fair, I have had poor performance from 3rd party Nokia compatible batteries, but that was about 12 years ago and they were NiCd.. *shudder*.. higher capacity batteries may put a larger load on the charging electronics in the phone which could cause problems.. Li-ion and Li-Pol battery charging is a fairly exact science, and the charge tech in the N900 will be expecting to charge a 1320mAh battery.. That being said, people have said positive things about one particular battery for the N810. it actually requires changing the back cover because is larger!
I certainly don't endorse and Nokia will probably dislike this post.. this is not a recommendation from, purely for information purposes

This is a Li-Ion battery.. the N900 will come with a Li-Polymer battery.. that is a newer tech and apparently less prone to bursting into flames..
Anyway, as for actual battery life, its going to be similar to the iphone 3gs, the hardware is very very similar (though I would've though the n900 hi-res screen ate more power.. dunno).. expect a day or two with some decent usage.. Personally, that's more than enough for me.. especially as it charges over usb!! There is no memory effect on Li-pol so topping up each night is fine for me

If the n900 gets me through 2 days without the need to recharge that would be great. I had a tmobile htc g1 and they have horrible batt life- i think, just from IMing and texting, i started 10am and it died 1pm. And i think i made 2 or 3 calls for about 2 - 5mins each but it was mostly heavy texting and IMing and about an 1-1/2hrs in music. Screen brightness at its lowest and on 2g edge connection(wifi off, bluetooth off). Ive had other smartphones with a tad better batt life but nothing yet to go the distance or even remotely close to something that can be used for a primary device. If the N900 can replace my laptop(the asus eeepc 1005ha which last 12hrs) as my primary go to device then that would be cause to celebrate.
I actually was hoping to get a TEGRA smartphone but it seems that they wont be coming out this year. I hear they are really low power consumpter chipsets. Hopefully Nokia get their hands and starts playing with them. But i did order a US N900 yesterday so im hoping for the best.
You guys are awesome at replying! Thanks a lot.

Yea, i was just talking to a customer rep and here are the specs for the battery:
Music- 24hrs
Video- 5hrs
Talk time:
GSM phone- 9hrs
Wcdma(3G)- 5hrs
Those are pretty good specs for the battery. I forgot to ask about how long would a daily usage would be but from the fact sheet in th elink listed above its about 1+day of use with internet always on.

Here is a fact Sheet of N900 from NOKIA.
Not sure if it is plausible.

its the same 1320 mah battery that is in the 5800, so i'm guessing it'll last somewhere around a day and a half on normal usage, and a day tops on power usage.
its good enough imo, but it could have been better with the usual 1500mah battery...

For N900, in pocket al day, with 3G on, BT on, with WIFI OFF and no inteactive usage, battery life is less than 10 hours. FOr any interactive use on the internet, the battery life is < 4 hours. FOr light phone usage with BT, you will be lucky to see 6 hours. Nokia will not replace this device, since it is past 14 day return limit.

Mine last me 12hours- 14hours with 3G, WIFI a few hours constantly on. Watch Youtube videos etc.. PHONE calls, constantly SMS, BT, Photos, videos...etc..
Constantly using it all day and got 12hours-14hours. 2G and 3G doesn't seem to save any battery life. Switched to 2G and the battery performed the same.

I have had 50+ Nokia's during the last two decades and have never had one with as poor battery life as the N900.
I get about 12 hours with light use, about 18 on standby, about 2.5 hours when internet is on and using voice for about 60 minutes. This is **bleep**, especially when Sunrise in Switzerland where I bought it, advertises 96 hours standby and Nokia itself says 72 hours.
Although the telephone is an interesting small Linux based computer that the application writer in me loves, the lawyer in me tells me Nokia is selling a phone that is unusable and thus not of merchantable quality.
I hope Nokia will fix this as they have a very interesting item in the N900. If they don't they deserve to punished for having cheated their customers.

Ccompletely agree with you. The battery life i get on my phone is just about 6 hours all in all with no phone calls,3G on and light messaging, one facebook widget only on the desktop. The phone has some great features, but the battey is just unacceptable. Ridiculous really. Cant be charging the phone everywhere I go...I have tried a lot of stuff after reading from discussions in these nokia forums like WIFI switcher (turns off WIFI search), reduced the display brightness and just 1 widget on the desktop, where as u can have multiple widget on each of the 4 desktops on the phone. Feel theres no point of using this phone to even 1/3rd its capabilities coz the battery just does not support it and give me the freedom to use it as what it is meant for. I am only pinning my hopes on a new software update of some kind that will improve the battery life. Otherwise im gonna have to carry 2 phones everywhere I go to keep switching the sim card ever time the N900 is dead.
