N86 GPS problem

I have a problem with GPS on Nokia N86:

It has a huge problem to get a connection with sattelities. It is not a Ovi Maps fault because I  have checked it with other applications. Even if it connect with sattelites, it works inaccurately and keeps breaking the conection. The software is up to date. It made a test with Nokia LD-3W via bluetooth and it works perfect. Is it possible that integrated GPS is broken? Does anybody knows the solution?

The only consolation for me is that I'm not the only one with this problem...

Re: N86 GPS problem

I leave in France and I bought a Nokia N86 8MP few weeks ago.

It's a very good Nseries device and a powerful cameraphone but  I  have this problem with the GPS too.

I hope that an update of the firmware will solve this problem !

Updated which delays coming...

Hi,

I'm from Czech Republic and I have same problem too. It looks like world wide problem. I hope next firmware release will fix it.

Re: N86 GPS problem

Agree. the GPS on my old N95 worked much better compared to what I'm experiencing with my N86 8MP.

Re: N86 GPS problem

The N86 8MP is a great phone that is let down by it's poor GPS performance. It sometimes engages whilst indoors but I have just been out in the back garden twice and the GPS just refuses to engage.

The GPS location stamp worked very well for some photos that I took yesterday.

I'm hoping that this is not a hardware problem that can be fixed by firmware.

Re: N86 GPS problem

I have same problem with my N86. Seems it started when I did the latest firmware update, before this the GPS function was working fine (but other functions didn't, like realplayer). Hope they will fix in the next Firmware update.

Currently running:

Software version 11.043

Software function date 29-06-2009

Custom version 11.043.260.01

Custom version date 17-08-2009

Re: N86 GPS problem

My version of software is: 10.086

I see that You have got 11.043, so how did You update it? Because Nokia Software Updator is telling me that my phone has got the latest.  :smileysad:

About the problem; did anybody call to Nokia to ask what is going on?

Because if it is an international problem i cant believe that nokia doesnt know about it.

It is really anoying, I payed not the cheapest contract to get it and GPS is one of the most important features for me.

Firmware etc is up to date.

Has anyone solved this yet. Is it on a branded phone people are gettign this problem?

Have others always had this problem or is it just with the latest firmware?

Re: N86 GPS problem

I tried it and the intersting is that google maps finds sattellites for <1min always (even at home, where ovi maps and garmin cant find any) and it finds 2-3 sattellites. I dont know why this is so but it's a fact. Also google maps are way better as maps quality, since i'm in Bulgaria and ovi maps supports only the capital. Garmin's maps are ok, but still google's are better. Another + for google maps is that it has an option for wi-fi AGPS(probably i just cant find this option on ovi and garmin?). The only thing that's bothering me is that google maps doesnt have voice navigation(or does it?).

Re: N86 GPS problem

I have managed to get Ovi maps working but it involves completely resetting the phone. The *#7780# or *#7370# and reset did not work only the type of reset described below.

Turn off the phone. Hold down * and 3 and the green call button while turning the phone on. The completely resets the phone. I did this a couple of times and now ovi maps works.

Still think the phone is dodgy since still lots of bugs.I suspect I will probably need to do this again in the furture.

I tried doing this a few times and on some occasions Ovi maps worked poorly and some times it worked OK. I think it is best to do a few resets on top of each other to make sure the phone is fully reset.

Please let me know if this helps.

Re: N86 GPS problem

Hi Folks,

I also got a N86 a few days ago and well, I also have that GPS problem.

The strange thing is, I installed Sygic 7.x and he navigation was working without problems, 3 times no problem to get a quick gps fix.

But as for me Sygic is **bleep** I decided to switch over to Garmin Mobile XT which I liked on the 5800.

From that time I experiance problems with a gps fiy, sometimes it works within a minute, sometimes I wait 30 minutes without any fix.

During that time I'm outside and A-GPS is switched on.

It's the same if I just try the Nokia tools like OVI-Maps, or just GPS informations.....no fix, so it's not a Garmin problem.

I'm not sure if that is an issue which will be fixed with a firmware update, but I hope so very much!

I'm thinking of getting it to a Nokia Service point to complain about it....will see...

As far it does not look like anybody has a solution for that problem....damnit

Re: N86 GPS problem

Nokia released a software update v20.115. It isn't available on the website, it must be done through the mobile.

1.Click on applications.

2.Click SW Update.

3.You will find one update click on(mark the check box).

4.Then install.

It worked fro me. But another problem came up, when i click tools setting and choose Navigation the  OVI maps software restarts.
