N85 need to recover

While trying to overcome a problem with my Nokia I decided to re-install the phone software (as I did before) using the Nokia Updater. Unfortunately after about three hours and many connect/disconnect battery and USB cable as requested by the Nokia Updater it could no longer find the phone model connected to my PC even though the Windows 7 makes the sound that a device is plugged to the PC. As the Nokia Updater checks beforehand for the phone model my N85 phone with less than a year of use became dead (I cannot turn it on)! on Grateful for any assistance!

Re: N85 need to recover

Hi there! :smileyhappy:

I just read your post, and I understand how frustrating this have caused you, so in response to your query, I'll be actually suggesting you to send your phone down to the nearest Nokia Service Center, since the phone won't turn on after the trial and error scenario with updating your phones software. So while your phone is being repaired I'll be also advcising you to uninstall the PC Suite in your computer, kindly follow this link to download the Nokia PC Suite Cleaner the application that you'll use to completely and properly uninstall PC Suite and it's other components.:

Hope tis' help!  :smileywink:

Re: N85 need to recover

Thanks for your proposed solution. Presently I am living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and my first action was taking the unit to the local repair shop! Please note that in Brazil Nokia do not honor warranty to phones bought abroad hence I know that will have to pay for the format. However the local Nokia repair shop is more concerned about making big money and not giving post warranty support! Their proposed fix was to replace the N85 motherboard costing more than US$ 880! I tried to talk to Nokia Brazil staff however, they insist that they cannot interfere as they are not responsible for their representative! So, it is up to me to accept or not the repair estimate! Please note that connecting the N85 to Windows both 7 and XP the computer USB port senses that something is connected!

n85 recovery

There are may be more than just one company to hold the franchise of a Nokia Care Center in a country. you could try another center.

Anyway, in response to your query, please be more specific in "dead". What happens when you try to turn it on?

Re: n85 recovery

Please note that the other nearest care center is located in Sao Paulo at more than 400km from here!

Re: n85 recovery

Not even a vibrate? Hmm, if your board is fried we cant do anything about it. The only thing possible to do is to remove memory card and try to hard-reset-boot it. Hold the *. green and 3 buttons at the same time, then power it on. If nothing happens, sorry, no other thing to do other than pay up. But $880!!! That's highway robbery! The board shouldnt cost that much! A board basically is cheaper than a phone! A board for the n85 should just cost around maybe $300 AFAIk

Re: n85 recovery

Hi There!  :smileyhappy:

Just read your reply today, my apologise, well with regards to the warranty coverage, it's not only Brazil that has this process, as per Nokia if the phone is purchased overseas the warranty will really be voided and you will be asked to pay for the servicing of the phone, it's for all country. Sometimes there are extent that the phone cannot be repaired on your hown country because the phone is purchase overseas due to some Software Compatibility issue, the Software of that phone may not be compatible with the Software in Brazil...

Hope tis' help!  :smileywink:

Re: n85 recovery

Many thanks for your comments however, I cannot agree to your comment on Overseas Software Compatibility as NOKIA offers only one international source (PC Suite) for updating their products! If there were any compatibility issues separate sites would be available to cover for different languages. Also, the issue would be well known to the NOKIA community! Concerning the voided warranty: Yeah! I knew that when I went for servicing and I was willing to pay for the repair but one can never expect such ransack! I will still try sending the phone abroad for repair and if the phone ever recovers I will donate it! No more NOKIA! The first experience with this brand was enough to be my last! One reminder: in the near future Brazil will host the soccer world cup and the Olympics as well. Hence, if you are visiting this country do not bring your NOKIA as if something goes wrong you may end up without your cellular! However, if you still fond of NOKIA bring a spare altogether!

No wonder specialized Internet pages comparing smart phones NOKIA brand is no longer listed among the five best ones!

Re: n85 recovery

same problem here. Philippines. So I guess I will just have to look into other brands. Never mind this nokia **bleep**. First, no language support and now no repair support when it was I think the NSU that had the problem in the first place. So frustrating. I didn't even do a single thing while updating for my phone to go lunatic just like that and I can perfectly comprehend English Instructions so don't go "You didn't follow the instructions" on me now. I HATE NOKIA!!!
