Hello
I was wondering if it was possible to use the backup file from a Nokia N95 8GB to a Nokia N85 ?

I don't see any reason why not, but aren't the back up files called .nbu? How do you create an .arc?

well, that's the trick, the N95 8GB backup file are .arc :-)
So I guess it won't be possible

Are you reffering to backup files created on the phone, by the phone, or backup via PCS?
It will work via PCS, but probably not via the phone.

I am on mac, so I was thinking via the phone.
I have the old N95 .arc file but not the phone anymore.
Do you mean that if I found a pc, I could use PCS to put it into the N85 ?
How does it work ?

If you wanna do it via phone, than you should use built-in Data Transfer application - of course, that requires you to actually have both phones at the same time, I don't know if that's the case.
If you can do it via PC, you should have Win OS and PC Suite installed, there's an application in it, it's called Nokia Content Copier, which copies content
from one phone to another - obviously, that's the application creating .nbu files.

Ok, thank you hole.
I just realised that my N85 is doing a .arc backup file. So I tried to use FExplorer to overwrite my N85 backup with the N95 one. The it is possible to do that but the phone won't recognize the N95 backup .arc file as a real backup file so it won't give you the "restore from mem. card" menu in File Manager.
So this solution does not work.
Does Nokia Content Copier allow you to copy from one file or do I need to have the two phones ? (which I don't)

Please try Noki to open and extract the content of the backup.arc file.
There's also a backup file recovery guide.
Some content might not be portable between phones. The phonebook and user files will work well.
