Re: N85 Issues & Feedback

This N85 is super buggy set as like N96. Unfortunately both I own. I got my replacement of N85. My N85 has earpiece problem. Nokia care told me this problem is from motherboard, then they replace my set, not only motherboard, cause they put scratch on my housing so, they change full of my N85

I am no fAN boy, but I love my n85. It is a nice little upgrade to the n95-3 and n95-4. I left my n95-4 for a HTC touch diamond and then an Iphone 3g. As far as i am concerned the n85 is the best phone out there right now. It has all the nessecary smartphone feature such as exchange compatibility with folder sync if you buy roadsync. It has good multimedia features and has a wide array of applications such as slingplayer that are compatible.builtin Gps with turn by turn applications available for free and ones you can buy. It has a better than average camera for A PHONE AND ALL THE BASIC PHONE CAPABILITIES such as mms, texting copy & paste. 3g capability with tethering.

Its a great phone. I am still looking for the perfect one, but that will never happen

@baimo.
How long have you had your phone please? What problems if any have you had? With all the negative feedback here something positive would be refreshing. If your experience has been a good one perhaps you could let us all know.

I'm not looking for any further resolution regarding my N85 because I got a refund. After reading your message this afternoon however, I sent a letter outlining my experiences and concerns with the N85 to Nokia's Farnborough HQ.

You're lucky! I tried to exchange the phone with the shop on 2nd day after I bought it because the phone kept rebooting whilst I was trying to upload by data from my N95 but they didn't have an exchange policy much less a refund policy. Bah.

Keeping my fingers crossed that my N85 will come back from the service centre with all issues resolved now.

I'm sorry to hear that. :smileysad:

I always buy from Nokia UK's online shop because they give you a complete refund if you're not satisfied for any reason within seven days.

You have to be so careful when paying less for handsets online because companies operating on small profit margins tend to have less generous refund/return policies.

I'll cross my fingers that your N85 is 100% when you get it back too! :smileywink:

Good luck!

Re: N85 Issues & Feedback

I am mobillshop owner, I am also facing major problems with my new N85.

I am facing with constant restarting of the handset. The problems started with 1 month of purchase. Initially it was happening only while using resource heavy apps like say the Mpas, or Video recording. Subsequently I have started facing problems of restart even while making a call or even while just browing through the contacts / menu.

I took the phone to Nokia Service center in chennai. They took the phone and gave it back after 2 days, saying everything is rectified. I tested infront of them and the phone restarted again.

I want to give this phone back. I have lost faith in Nokia,so Iam going to APPLE Iphone

I am sorry to hear about your problems with the N85.

Does your country have consumer laws which protect you from "inherently faulty" goods? If this problem is so easy to demonstrate, I imagine you would have a very good case... but alas, consumer laws vary considerably from country to country.

The least the Nokia service point could have done after you demonstrated the problem in front of them (after it was supposedly fixed) is replace the phone.

Re: N85 Issues & Feedback

I've also got a lot of issues with the N85 restarting. When I first got my N85 I had lots of problems with the battery, it went down to 1 bar in just 10 hours after a full load and then the next morning the phone was so empty that I had to reload it to turn it on.

They replaced my faulty one for a new one (with the same battery which works perfectly on this one). I did an update to V11 the moment I got the phone but even the first time I was charching the battery the phone restarted several times. Now this afternoon I have been using the camera for the first time, taking photos is not a problem but making videos is hell!

When I shot one video of about 1 minute, I wanted to film a new one and the device just hang and had to be restarted in order to make it work again (waited for 5 minutes before deciding to finally resetting it manually).

Also displaying videos makes the device reset after a few seconds (not all the times but most of the times).

Nokia, PLEASE FIX THIS! It's driving me crazy! I used to be such a Nokia fan and was already looking forward to telling my friends about the new N85 device which I though would be the best phone around but all I got so far is a lot of disappointments!

Re: N85 Issues & Feedback

I do not know what the policy is of Nokia in other countries but I was told today by a person in a phone shop here in my home city that Nokia Australia has a 30 day exchange policy on all it's phones. So in other words if the phone develops a fault within the first 30 days it can be exchanged for a new phone. Also it does not have to be done at the phone shop where you bought it. This means if you are on holidys or travelling away from home you can take it into any phone shop for replacement. This is a replacement only policy. You can not get a cash refund.
I would suggest that people in other countries check out the policy for their country.
This is useful information to know.

Re: N85 Issues & Feedback

I am a big Nokia fan and was greatly anticipating the release of N85 - however it seems the implementation falls far short of the promised functionality. Software issues can hopefully be fixed by firmware upgrades, but until Nokia resolves all these hardware issues and achieves a satisfactory build quality, I won't buy one.

Are you listening Nokia? I'm not the only one... people want to buy your phones but spending $500 on something that just falls apart is a joke! Get your act together and your sales will skyrocket...

Oh, I actually bought my phone from my mobile operator because I could trade in my previous phone.

With mobile operators, I guess since the phone isn't their product, hence they advised me to bring it back to the Nokia Care Centre.

Regardless, I just hope they fix it!

Thanks for posting!

Hmmm. I suspect that the 30 day exchange policy is only for Australia.. because this applies not only to phones but to all other retail items as well, right? I think it is because of your consumer laws.

Singapore on the other hand does not have such generous pro-consumer laws. :smileysad:

Re: N85 Issues & Feedback

I have experienced a few of the described problems over here. Thank God my housing is still intact, although the sliding mechanism made a scratch on the backplate that hides the media keys (honestly, i don't know how this happened). Since I don't have the time to send the phone back and I need it badly, I guess I'll live with the scratch and the wobbly slider.

Regarding the battery performance, I read that if you set the network to gsm, disable naviwheel, bluetooth, autorotation and breathing features, you will have longer battery life. I have tried it myself, and i have seen a significant improvement (about 10 more hours of battery life, to be precise). However, if you use wifi or GPS a lot, your battery will be drained real fast, regardless of these steps.

Another thing I tried to stabilise the internal memory was formatting the hdd, reapplying the firmware update on a clean phone and then formatting the phone again. Only this has worked to keep my phone with 57 mb of free ram. Needless to say, you will need to do a full backup of your phone and memory card using Nokia PC Suite.

As for the "themes.mbm" image appearing in the gallery.. Well, I have not been able to work it out, but at least these annoying images don't appear in the "captured photos" gallery (they seem to appear only in the "downloads" and "all items" galleries), so I try not to open those, since the only pictures I view on my phone are the ones I take with it's excellent (but slow) 5mpx camera. By the way, downloaded videos also appear in these galleries.. I wonder why...

Last but not least, I formatted the memory card with the phone (do not format it on Windows, or another device).

After following these steps I have experienced less freezing. Doesn't mean I am happy with the phone. It's full of bugs, but since I have decided to keep it hoping that future firmware updates will take care of the issues, I thought I might share this with other enthusiast and naive N85 users :smileyhappy:

Worst things about this phone, IMO, are the FM transmitter, which is very weak, and the music player. Sounds real distorted when playing it on my car stereo. I will have to buy another N81 for that purpose, since they are cheap and I have not been able to find any other device that matches it's quality.

In spite of all these flaws, I still like the phone and I have decided to keep it. I hope Nokia really listens to us and addresses these flaws. In these times of crisis, I don't think any company can afford to ignore their loyal users, because everyday competition will be harder.

Hope this helps, and happy 2009 to everybody.
