N82 Improvement List - feature request

[ Edited ]
Hello All

I have been using n82 since 1st week of Dec 2007.

I should say, this phone is GREAT, and has a lot of potential to improve too.

There are a few things which bother me, I will contribute to this list as and when I realize something on the phone is needed as a change or additional feature:

1) When you play music on the phone, and use provided headset, I would like the buttons on head set to change to next song, just like radio goes to next Radio Station., since I love to listen to music on this phone, and I would consider a great threat to other products in the market.

A user always have loads of songs on my phone, considering the 2GB or 4 GB microSD card, some times you don't want to listen to a particular song and would like to skip it instantly, rather than removing you phone from your pocket and, unlocking it, going to music app, and changing the song.

2) When you are viewing any video or image, in the gallery, in options, I would like to have - assign as ringtone to group, or assign as ringtone to contact. (for video, only when you just finished shooting the video, in the preview mode you see this option to assign it to a contact as ringtone, but not after you have saved to the gallery or view the gallery later)

3) Similarly, when in Gallery, each Video or Image option should have 2 new items, called
- Save as Ringtone, (this would hide the video or image from gallery) so these particular videos or images are only available on your ringtone list.
- Save as Private - this would save the video or image - only for private viewing, using some password, - this will make the private video or image disappear from common one click Gallery - There should be added option in Options to view private gallery, on password entering only.

4) On 5MP Camera, in settings there should be image quality options, right now the pictures you click with 5MP camera are saving to a file size of around 700 to 1MB, I think this is really compressing the images and reducing the quality of the pictures, I would appreciate if there are 3 options, high, medium, low, - considering the current to be low - 700 to 1MB

5) ...this post is to be continued...

Thank you

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

Hi. I like your post and i am planning to buy the N82 but since you had already a first hand experience on the device can i have an inquiry in its features? Is it true you can also assign custom tones for SMS for different contacts like the ones we do for ringtones? And in your post you said you can assign video tones as well? WOW! that is awesome!!! Can you verify my inquiry? Thank you so much!

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

Hello

1. No we cannot assign message tone for specific contact.

2. Yes Video tones are easy, just go to contact, and options show ringtone, there is a list of all the mp3, mp4, aac, etc formats showing in a single list (No typing Search here,) if its a long list you have to scroll all the way down.

Yes it is a great phone no matter what, I hope nokia reads my post and does the improvements.

Please if anyone knows how to connect my post to the people at nokia, please help me

Thanks

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

Hello

I have had my phone since the beginning of January. In fact my 14 day trial is about to come to an end. I didn't like the feel of the N95, read that the Viewty switches off when it charges (???), the camera on the O2 XPA was rubbish (spot the trend? going for big screens for watching vids, editing files) and basically I'm getting used to the N82.

What annoys me about the N82?
1. The GPS seems a bit weak - but then I have no experience of GPS units so can't truly judge.

2. If I delete an email from my POP account on the phone it still keeps the header on the phone. My account is Gmail so it is going to get BIG!

3. When I bluetoothed my contact details from my old phone to the N82 it received it as an SMS and only had the first record in it.

4. Cut and paste, although new to me on a mobile phone, seems a little clumsy. I have heard about a "pencil" button that apparently was good. The "media" button for me is wasted. The only thing I would need quick access to, because it is running in the background, is the music player. The gallery, vids, etc are never going to be run in the background, and are all accessible from the root menu. Plus there is the gallery key too. Again wasted on the whole (unless I am not using it right). These function keys would be great if they could be reassigned.

5. Realplayer is used for playing the vids - but you can't use it to play music. Any reason? And it doesn't seem to have a full screen mode.

6. I agree about the headphone buttons. Volume works and that is it. What is the point of the other 3 buttons???

7. In the music player, when you are 1 directory up from the list of tracks (album listing) it takes 2 or 3 clicks to actually play the whole album (select album->select track 1 OR options->play->play on device). Is there any way of shorcutting this?

8. I have yet to find how to play all in random order (probably my ignorance).

9. A title mode on predictive text would be good where, after every space, it starts the next word with a capital letter.

10. The games that came with this phone are boooooooring! Is it the same for all Nokias?

On the whole I like the phone a lot. One thing that has helped immensely is the "tricks" section on this forum. I don't understand why the instruction manual (both paper and PDF) are so simplistic. Hell, only (true) geeks read manuals so put stuff in there that counts. Manufacturers always complain that hardly any functionality is used on their phones - well, that's because you don't give proper instructions on how to setup uPnP home media!!!

By the way, if you want to make things private there is software out there that can do that for you. I think I saw it at www.download.com

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

@markdibley

I hope you don't take this the wrong way but you REALLY should read the User's Guide for the phone because you are asking some pretty obvious questions that are explained in it. I may not go into the most hardcode aspects of the phone but people looking for these can usually find other ways.

1. It is a bit weak compared to the powerful Sirf-chipsets new GPS units use but it is a phone. Besides if you use A-GPS it gets the satellite fix faster than my Garmin.

2. Well the header shouldn't be more than a couple of Kb's so I wouldn't worry.

3. I you received it as a SMS you most have send it as a SMS. Are you sure you do not just believe it to be an SMS because it ends up in the common inbox??

4. Cut and paste can be used on many phones but not as convenient as on the N82. In the UG it is explained - simply uses the shift (#) key and hold it in. Use the navigational pad to mark the text while holding it in. There is no pencil key on the N82 because it is replaced by the shift key (#).

I agree that the media key should be able to be reassigned.

5. The RealPlayer is in full screen mode. You are probably watching files that does run natively in 320x240 (a DVD source?) and that is why you have the borders in the top and bottom.

6. Agree. Skip track is essential.

7. Nope and it is quite annoying but you can simply make a playlist of if.

8. Very simple (also in the UG). When playing a song it is available from the menu.

9. Good idea but I have not seen it on any devices yet.

10. The games with K850 where boring as well. It is simply a matter of taste and the phone is going to offer N-Gage so plenty of opportunities to buy new games. Don't expect a lot of cool preinstalled games on phones in the future when they are so easy to buy.

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

No offence taken - I have read some of the manual - it would be great if they put the pdf of the manual on the phone. A very simple and basic idea.

When I said about playing from the album menu I meant being able to play WITHOUT going into menus - menus are becoming quite passe.

I dont understand why there are no Ngage games for the N82 yet. Surely you prepare some in advance of the release. The best take up time has to be when people take the phone out the box and start to explore.

BUt I still lke it and the sat nav worked fime in the car - nice

Hello

Thank you for taking time and chatting about our loved N82.

to continue from my 1st post up there....features needed:

Please if you need more....just continue from where I stopped...

Feature request / improvements:

5. ***** (desperate requirement)
or else the phone will fail sooner than expected in market.

Because the loudspeaker volume is super useless as of now.

Volume controls needed. Just like a mixer volume control on our computers,
there should be a volume mixer control panel on the phone too.

Global settings - this is the setting for max volume it can be heard on the
phone

a) volume for ringtone -

b) volume for radio - on headphones (which is good as of now)

c) volume for radio - on loud speaker (which is very BADDD, I have hard time
trying to listen to radio in a single room itself)

d) volume for music - headphones

e) volume for music - loudspeaker (which is ok, needs to increase 40% at the minimum)

f) volume for phone call - headphones

g) volume for phone call - ear piece

h) volume for phone call - loudspeaker (this is also useless as of now, I cannot
hear any phone conversations on a loudspeaker when I am at any public place,
it just inst loud enough)

6. Title predictive text..I like
that, title caps for every word after space... (add this feature)

7. Built in player for WMV files
for playing WMV files and also playing online WMV content while browsing

8.. Built in or upgrade Flash
player for playing youtube, or other FLV related online media

Ah! If you mean "Use the media key to pop up the music player and it is an option at the bottom of the on screen options" then I have found it.

Personally I wasn't using the media key, but going straight to the music player and the option is not anywhere there. My mistake for not making my particular gripe more clear.

Why does the media wrapper have functionality that the music player doesn't have?

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

ok,

You can select a default mode when you plug in the usb, so basically I do agree on your point, but then again if you select a mode (tools > connectivity > usb> select ur default mode), then you don't need this unlock thingy.

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

Ok

The list continues

9. Problem: when you have a missed call, the small missed call icon only shows, on the other screens, except the home screen,... but when you have a unread msg it shows even on the home screen.

a) try to give a missed call to urself, then when u see the missed call notification on ur screen, (1 missed call), press Red button, so you can see the who gave you missed call even later. (this becomes unread missed call item), now u will see a small missed call icon on top of ur screen, in all the other screens, (menu's) but not on ur home screen.

To dear Nokia

I need slight improvement on inbuilt player.

In N82,Suppose we are running a song and we want to jump to the all songs list, then we had to select options-go to music menu and there we can choose,it takes time. What i want is that it would be better if we can go to all songs list just by pressing up and down navigation key.

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

Good point.

Imho the standard screensaver should have larger icons as well - the message icon for example is very small!

Re: N82 Improvement List - feature request

The N82, Firmware is out, and I have updated my phone, 11.0.117, but as of now I dont see any improvements or added features. I hope nokia is reading this.

10. Music Player: - In music player we need a few themes, or player skins

11. Music Player: - In music player we play any songs, and the headphones are plugged in, there is no Loudspeaker option, I agree we can unplug the headset and the Music will start playing thru loudspeaker, but what if I dont want to unplug the headphones, since they are nicely plugged in the headphone jack, and the phone sits well in my pocket, while listening to radio or music, while i take my walk. I can simply jump quickly to Music player on loudspeaker from Radio, if there are no good songs on radio without unpluggin the headphones, and figuring out where to put the loose end.

12. Bug: When you make a call : Your contacts list dont close, and it stays exactly where the last call was made.

13. Bug:: When you make or recieve a call:- the Contact list and the Logs are automatically open and they dont close unless you manually close them

14. to be continued......

This is pretty standard S60 though - it always shows the date/time that the phone showed at the time of receiving, *not* the time that the message was sent.

Irritating. Very, very irritating.

Sorry my post was unclear! I meant that the phone does not show the time and date when you open the message, you can only see such info by clicking on message details.
