N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

Just another fault that my N80 seems to have developed!
Has anyone else had this problem? All my other problems (bluetooth, memory etc) seem to be quite common, but I haven't heard anyone else with this one...

Basically, the speaker (that you put next to your ear during calls) only works some of the time. I took it into a service center last week, and it came back "fixed". Today, it has started doing it again.

I've tried rebooting the phone etc, and yes, I tried turning the volume up!

Shoddiest phone I've ever seen, this N80.

Re: N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

Hmm, I haven't noticed whether the background noise affects it. Have a go at plugging in a headset and then make a call. Remove the headset, and try again. Sometimes this temporarily fixes it. :smileyhappy:

...but then it obviously cuts out with a connection error, network busy message, or just quits back to the menu. :smileysad:

Re: N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

Hi there

I've recently noticed this problem occuring with my n80, at first it wasnt to much of a problem but the problem has just got worse, It seems that when ever i attempt to make a call I cant hear the ringing or if anyone picks up unless I place the call on loudspeaker or use a hands free kit,

I think this problem may inpart be due to the vibration setting that I had on that seemed to rock the phone from one country to another.

I did give it a subtle wack after much frustration with this problem and it started to work again, so this has led me to the conclusion the vibration may have loosed the slide mec and connections

Re: N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

My N80 has the same. A month or so ago it happend for the first time, but now it is happening quite frequently. I'm going to upgrade my Symbian OS within the next few days assuming it is a software issue.

My current firmware (*#0000#):

V 3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
Rm-92
Nokia N80 (02)

Has anyone who has had this problem got it fixed, being a software or hardware fix?

Firmware is updated to:

V 4.0623.0.41
26-07-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (02)

Now, hope for the best. Btw. as far as I can remember I never had the mentioned problem with a fully charged battery.

Re: N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

I've just started to have this problem come and go too.

After playing around for a while, I discovered that this only happens when making calls when the N80 has been slid 'open'. When the handset is 'closed', the speaker works fine.

I tried making a call with the handset closed and then slid the slider up whilst the call was active - lo and behold as I slid the phone open, the sound disappeard. Makes me feel like this is a dodgy connection rather than a firmware issue. If this is the case, and it's not an isolated case, it doesn't bode well for the durability of the N80 :smileysad: (mine's about 5 months old)

You can always tell when you're not going to have a sucessful call as the keypad tones do not work either when you press any buttons with the slider open (they presumably use the same speaker).

I'll be off to the Orange shop for my second replacement N80... (on the first one the front camera refused to work).

Re: N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

I have exactly this issue.
Been "fixed" twice so far & Vodafone have blamed software on both occasions.

I didn't change anything on my software after the 1st fix so I don't believe them. Will see how long it lasts this time then maybe kick up a fuss!

Mine has the same problem. I think it's a hardware problem because with the mobile slide open when I press with my finger in the back side of the speaker in sounds well.

I think tha it is a common fault because I had my first N80 changed with another new one because it begun to do the same 3 days after I bought it

Got mine fixed by Nokia Service Centre. They told me it was a hardware issue.

But after approximately 9 months the phone is starting to show this behaviour again... :smileysad:

Re: N80 speaker faulty (one that goes next to your ear, not the loud one)

I guess I was luckier than most . . . mine just stopped working this week.

Works fine with a headset and on loudspeaker but not without.

Oh well . . . won't be getting another Nokia, that's for sure.
