How did you manage to turn off WiFi?
04-Sep-2006 09:08 PM getsurfers wrote:Well I can get upto 5 days, normally 3. Wi-Fi is off, BT off, data set to when needed, phone in dual mode. I send a few texts (up to 7), make a number of short calls each day (prob 20-30 mins/day max) and check the news via web 2 or 3 times a day. That's on the original 614 fw too.

I had a problem when I was on 614 where the wifi couldn't be turned off. If you try to turn it off but the square stays on in standby then you may need a service upgrade. Just thought I would add that.

I think that comes from turning it off when it can see a network. It gets confused, bless, and keeps looking for that network even when out of range. Had that when I first got my N80, and a soft reset cured it.
pfloding, it turns the wi-fi into an 'ask mode', so should only poll when you tell it to or it hears a known network rather than anything in range.
Can't beleive that I'm in a minority of one, getting near 6230i battery levels compared to the rest of you guys - and on v614!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nokia, if you fancy making it worth my while, feel free to check out my handset & battery! That's a serious offer to hlp other n80 users!

Depends on your network, area (trees/high buildings between you and transmitter etc) and also building construction.
3G, certainly on Orange, seems to have lower penitration of concrete and steel constructions. This is proven, as If I go into the bathroom (no window, in centre of block flats with 4 walls in any direction) the phone looses all 3G signal, yet has full sig on GSM.

The base station will only respond when 'ping' received from a phone to log on. If you hold it near a TV you'll hear the interference as the network configure's it'self to know where you are (cell), and route calls to the nearest transmitters.
A phone will keep trying to find a network until told not to try again, or the battery runs out. It uses approx 2%+ of a 160 character SMS during the handshake process. Lower signal, means less bandwidth so longer to handshake.
Once a phone has logged on, the base station periodically pings the handset* with very small data so the dain is minimal (iirc less than 0.02% of an sms) if the signal is good. Again if weak, the ping takes longer and uses more juice.
*this explains the delay when turning on phone and receiving texts. IIRC network will send, retry 30secs, then 2min, then 6 min, then 12 min then give up until phone resends join request.Message Edited by getsurfers on 06-Sep-2006

If very high power consumption is endemic to low signals with 3G, then 3G needs fixing.

LOL. Blame the UK gov for screwing the networks for expensive licenses, meaning they have less cash to invest in upgrading the network coverage to cope with 3g
Some users have also reported v4 update seems to improve signal on the N80.

I think the government also stop different networks sharing transmitters too. That's what I read somewhere. In other countries they all share transmitters and rely on being a good network (Price wise and customer service) to get customers. Not sure if this is gospel but it does explain a few things.

Thanks for your good advice! Is there any chance that one of these settings, when wrong, can greatly increase power consumption for 3G under certain conditions?

Hi everyone, Disable the following functions, to gain *slightly* more battery life out of your N80. 1. Disable "Cell Broadcast" Menu > Messages > Options > Settings > Cell Broadcast > Reception "off". 2. Disable network time "Auto Update" Menu > Clock > Options > Settings > Network Operator Time "off". 3. Disable "Cell Info Display" Menu > Tools > Settings > Network > Cell Info Display "off". 4. Set GPRS (packet data) to "When Needed" Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Packet Data > Packet data conn "off". These should be helpful to prolong battery life. You can also set MMS retreival to "manual", but I see that as to inconvenient for me :-p Cheers.
I have now turned off 3G, and I'm approaching 24 hours with all 5 bars still showing! (Despite listening to the radio a bit.)
After having run down the battery, which may take some time now, I plan to turn 3G back on and test with just "GPRS when needed" (it was on "when available" for some reason).
Usable 3G, on demand, is one of the main point with the N80, so that it seems to drain the battery in record time is really annoying.
