Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

One other point for Orange network users, the phone will try to connect to 3G UMTS Packet Data service (and you can't switch it off by default). I get much better battery life when I remember to disconnect by pressing the "red" key on startup.

I have tried talking to Orange about this, but THEY don't see it as a problem so won't change it.

I understand from other posts that this is an Orange "enhancement" and may not be present in other network variants.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Had a strange attack of this last night. My N80 had 3 or 4 bars and then two hours later (all in standby) I heard the quiet, quiet Battery Low warning and the phone went dead.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Hi everyone,

The reason why I posted the previous tips on reducing battery consumption is because, the features listed were not needed to be in the state they were in.
E.g If you dont send MMS or do not connect to GPRS very often, then you dont need the "Packet Data" connection set at "When needed"

You shouldn't go to all trouble to preserve battery life, if it means turning your phone into a Nokia 3310.

Remember, playing with your phone, like navigating around the menu too much, does reduce your battery life. Also, the screen is the highest resolution per inch on the market, so make sure you put the display to sleep as quick as possible.

Go to:
Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Display...
> Set Power saver time-out to 2 mins or less...
> Set Sleep mode to on
> Set Light time-out to less than 15 secs...

You can also adjust the Light Sensor to a lower setting, but remember, trying to read something dark will strain your eyes, therefor doing more damage then intended.

* CORRECTION *

The above statement was slightly incorrect.
I meant to say:
..."you dont need to have the Packet Data connection to "When Available"....
Not when needed...

Thanks.

If you delete the Orange operator settings - goto tools > settings > phone > general and find REMOVE OPERATOR SETTINGS.You will never again be prompted or have to set packet data settings. Your connection settings are not affected btw.

Disable "Cell Broadcast" Menu > Messages > Options > Settings > Cell Broadcast > Reception "off". 2. Disable network time "Auto Update" Menu > Clock > Options > Settings > Network Operator Time "off". 3. Disable "Cell Info Display" Menu > Tools > Settings > Network > Cell Info Display "off". 4. Set GPRS (packet data) to "When Needed" Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Packet Data > Packet data conn "off". These should be helpful to prolong battery life. You can also set MMS retreival to "manual", but I see that as to inconvenient for me :-p Cheers.
Thanks for your good advice! Is there any chance that one of these settings, when wrong, can greatly increase power consumption for 3G under certain conditions?

I have now turned off 3G, and I'm approaching 24 hours with all 5 bars still showing! (Despite listening to the radio a bit.)

After having run down the battery, which may take some time now, I plan to turn 3G back on and test with just "GPRS when needed" (it was on "when available" for some reason).

Usable 3G, on demand, is one of the main point with the N80, so that it seems to drain the battery in record time is really annoying.

As a follow-up on my own posting I should mention that setting 3G to "GPRS as needed" did indeed seem to greatly prolong battery life. Of course, I also abstained from actually using 3G... (I haven't verified whether using GPRS once and then allowing the phone to "go off" 3G on it's own accord works OK.)

Other interesting problems involve the FM radio application (almost certainly) quickly draining the battery when the app ought to be dead or at least sleeping. (Also mentioned elsewere.)

After a similar experience with charging every 10th hour I did the following:
1. Bought new battery - no use.
2. Bought new mini-sd card (first one from ebay, second from local shop) No use.
Only alternative from Nokia support was to send the phone via mail to support center, which promised they could check it in a couple of week, which is no alternative when you buy a phone at that price for daily work.
3. I had installed a lot of programs on the mini sd-card. I then moved all programs to the phone memory - and voila - then I suddenly could use it for at least 48 hours. I suspect some of the programs - like handy clock - constantly did something in the background. Maybe someone else has similar experience??

Handy clock caused me huge issues with battery life the other day. It wasn't the clock itself, which I run from phone memory because I don't want it not working if I change SD Card, but the Auto Key Lock screen saver. It drained my battery in no time for some reason.

I've since turned this off and I'm getting 48 hours out of my phone.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

If you think 7 hours is bad try 3 1/2 hours for me.

Got my n80 on the 6th of this month from orange with all my hopes with a great little phone.

I put it on charge at 12am UK time got up at 7:30 to get ready for work with the phone still on charge..

Got the phone off change at 8:20 fully charged and now its 11:30 with only 2 battery bars.

You think I should send it back?

As I am still in the orange 14 day return period

Got to say love the phone but the battery life sucks big style.

I had a 6630 and 6680 before this phone and the battery lasted ages

Any ideas would be great

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Hi everyone,

Remember the posts I submitted is ONLY a workaround. Your phone should still have SUFFICIENT battery life without playing around with these features.

Please LOG ALL faults to Nokia. The more examples they have the more convinced they are to take action to adhere to their business practices (not to mention EU business practices).

Remember IT WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM IF NOKIS DOESNT KNOW ABOUT IT.

Cheers.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Have had another attack of the battery today. N80 was on charge last night all night and taken off charge 8am this morning. No calls/usage and the low battery warning went off at 12pm lunchtime shortly followed ie 5 seconds later by the phone shutting down.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Hi Folks,

I picked up a habit to charge my N80 to full (usually an hour++) while I prepare for bed, i.e. bath, brush my teeth, read mags/books, then plug it off the charger, and then plug it back on charge to full (usually within 30 minutes) when I woke up next morning.

So far, I had been able to remain at full bar for the whole of day under moderate usage, i.e. 30 min of music playing, 15 minutes of surfing, 30 minutes of talk time (all on blue tooth headset), 10SMS, blue tooth on 24x7, etc.

Hope this helps. Cheers. ^_^

I guess you are quite confident that the charger was plugged in? I had my phone plugged in over night a couple of days ago, but then early in the morning I had got battery low warnings, I noticed that the charger lead wasn't fully plugged in, when I pushed it in a few more mm then it started charging.

What is running on the phone?

Have you turned off wi-fi, bluetooth and activated sleep mode? (screen goes blank, and flashing blue LED)

Yep, all of them are off, sleep mode is on. Though rather ironic that a phone with loads of features needs them all turned off eh LOL

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

I don't think it is necessary to turn everything off, for example I have BT on all the time. For WLAN, that is always available, but some people seem to think it is neccessary to set the "show availability" option to on, all that does is show a little icon on the idle screen when there is some WLAN APs around. You don't need to set that to on to use WLAN, WLAN will work anytime you need it to if the AP is there.

Most likely reason then is some other appliction. Have you got some mail or IM program that is constantly checking for mails? even the internal mail program can be set to download mail automatically, I quickly realised that was a bad idea on mine if you set the timer too short...

No mail programs running. I'm starting to think that the plug wasn't in correctly like suggested earlier. Charged it again last night and it's currently at full bars (lunchtime)
