N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Without doing much at all (playing one mp3 tune, and looking for an unavailable 3G signal a couple of times), my N80 has drained its battery in about 7 hours. Only the "Standby" application is running, according to the phone.

Perhaps multiple hidden processes are draining the battery. Perhaps the fact that I haven't had working 3G for days now (which I blamed on the weather) has something to do with it. The phone is generally misbehaving now (browser not getting connection, etc), so I wouldn't be surprised if the battery drain has something to do with software problems.

Hey there, my battery lasted 6 hours before it was down to one bar or so the other day. I am only in GSM mode and there was about half signal with no programs running but it still drained. Guess there are a lot of problems to be resolved.
Is that an N95 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!?

About two weeks. I have obtained about 20 hours at one stage, but now things have gone downhill.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

The curious thing is that sometimes the battery will last 2days and other times it will lose bars really quick. I do pretty much the same with it each day and signal is quite steady. Weird isn't it.

Yes, I recharged the battery this evening, and took it off the charger perhaps 6 hours ago, and now it is down to one bar again. I've done absolutely nothing with the phone this time..

Very, very strange!

WiFi is on. It was on when I had 24 hours battery time too. Only difference now from when battery life was half-decent is that 3G has stopped working altogether now.

IMHO turning the wifi off should see battery life increase a lot i.e only turn wifi on when needed. My experience with my Palm Tungsten C is that in a device thats normally good for 2-3 days turning on wi-fi kills the battery in maybe 2-3 hours! Cheers, Owen

6-7h hours!!! New low record... It´s a shame a very good phone without battery. Is a toy for show... Well, if turn off 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, turn your N80 on a basic 2G phone!

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

After a similar experience with charging every 10th hour I did the following:
1. Bought new battery - no use.
2. Bought new mini-sd card (first one from ebay, second from local shop) No use.
Only alternative from Nokia support was to send the phone via mail to support center, which promised they could check it in a couple of week, which is no alternative when you buy a phone at that price for daily work.
3. I had installed a lot of programs on the mini sd-card. I then moved all programs to the phone memory - and voila - then I suddenly could use it for at least 48 hours. I suspect some of the programs - like handy clock - constantly did something in the background. Maybe someone else has similar experience??

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Interesting. I would expect the phone to consume more power when accessing the SD Card, it just didn't occur to me just how much it does use.

I have always installed programs into the phones memory, and data, mp3, pics etc to the SD Card. It would explain why I can go for days using the n80 as a simple phone, and just a few hours when using mp3 and other "smartphone" features.

I have toyed with the idea of a spare battery, but I am concerned about getting one of the 760mAh ones by mistake. I do wish that Nokia would put some other secondary identification on the batteries if they insist on using the same id for different capacities. I did ask them direct, but they didn't see why this was necessary!

I thought of going direct for one, the Nokia online shop, but they don't sell them (I asked them why, but they just restated that they don't sell them).

wow so has the whole N80 battery fiasco come down to putting things on the sd card instead of the phone memory?

whats the phone memory of the N80?

Looks like it in my case. Maybe others with battery problems should have a look where they have put their programs? I also hope that Nokia might comment on it.

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

Hi,

I think its 40MB. Check this out:
http://www.nseries.com/nseries/v2/media/product/tech_specs/en-AP/tech_specs_n80_en_AP.html?lang=en&country=AP#memory

But in File manager, I get the following for memory details on the phone memory:
19 MB Memory in use
28 MB Free memory
Does that meant that we're supposed to have 47MB instead?

In any case, I'm on the latest 623 firmware.

Also, just moved Adobe and Office to phone memory, but I left AgileMessenger, Bikini Beach, Opera Mini and WorldMate behind, so that I don't have to reinstall them after each flash. Actually, do we need to reinstall our application if we had done a backup on the phone memory before the flash of the firmware? I mean will the restore actually put the installed applications in the phone memory back in place?

Cheers. ?_?

Re: N80 battery life down to 7 hours!

sysinit,

When I got my n80 flashed from 614 to 617 all the apps in phone memory survived and worked ok. I did have 2 backups though, just in case!

No doubt if I had not got a backup, it would have crushed the apps (sods law and all that). In fairness to Nokia, my HP iPAQ smartphone trashes everything when you do a FW update and you have to reinstall everything! But at least you can do PC updates on that (yes folks, I know it's coming for the n80 and I look daily for it on the software download site).

Alright!

Thanks TC!

He he he. Let me plan moving AgileMessenger, Opera Mini and WorldMate into the phone memory. Hopefully this will save more battery power.

Cheers. ^o^

Here is an update:

I decided to put the phone near the WiFi access point this night to see if that would help. Number of bars were the same when going to bed and waking up, so there seemed to be a benefit there.

Also, today 3G started working again. I have now turned of "Show availability" for this phone (WLAN works fine anyway). Perhaps there is some condition where the phone sees the WLAN but the WLAN doesn't see the phone, and the phone keeps sending and sending its ID.. Something was going on, and it managed to interfere with 3G operation as well.

For the first time in days I managed to watch the news via 3G today. The phone is almost flat now (not charged since late yesterday evening), but has been on the "one bar" for a couple of hours now.

BTW, the low battery warning is silly as there isn't even time to look at the phone before the message is gone.

I installed Opera on SD, so will avoid running Opera and see if that helps too.

Agreed. The actual use of this as a 3g phone is limited to a couple of hours without reducing the battery life a fair bit and compromising it's use as it's main function, a phone.

Well I can get upto 5 days, normally 3. Wi-Fi is off, BT off, data set to when needed, phone in dual mode. I send a few texts (up to 7), make a number of short calls each day (prob 20-30 mins/day max) and check the news via web 2 or 3 times a day.

That's on the original 614 fw too.
