I have solved my problem using Windows 7.
After the motherboard of my N8 wasreplaced a few days ago the phone did not play the music that I have stored in the external memory card. What has worked for me is:
-Turn off the N8.
-Connect to the PC (Windows 7) via USB.
-Using windows explorer move all the music files to “PlayList” folder of the memory card.
-Remove the folder named “private” of the memory card.
-Disconnect USB.
-Start the phone, open music player music -> options -> refresh library. It takes a while, be patient. You will see a progress prompt.

that's one of those instances where something worked for all the wrong reasons
the playlists folder is not meant to contain music, it's for playlists. fortunately the phone largely ignores the location of the music. but you could just as well have put it in a new folder called 'bananas'
Do not delete the folder 'private' - it contains all the system files for everything on the phone, all the installed apps, settings, everything. it's like deleting the app data folder on your windows machine. and is likely to cause instability else where. you managed to delete the correct folders by chance
the folder you need to delete are detailed earlier in this post
private\10281e17
private\101ffca9
repeat for the memory card aswell.
then refresh library.

I guess it worked for me because I do not have any application on the external memory card.
Thank you for the info.

I never had these "privat folders" and everything else works fine, except: I CAN´T GET RID OF SOME MUSIC TITLES!!!

must have them, I just read the posts in here and fixed the same issue. Thanks to flagpole and rijksband
1) Enable viewing of hidden files and folders on your PC.
2) Connect the phone in "Data transfer" mode to your PC. This is the important step, otherwise you will not see the private folder.
3) Open the phone directory, on mine it comes up as "Nokia Ovi Suite"
4) Open the folder "private\101ffca9" and delete the file called "harvesterdb.dat"
5) Open the folder "private\10281e17" and delete the two files called "[101ffc31]mpxv3_1i" and "[101ffc31]pcv6_1i" ).
6) Disconnect the phone from the PC and open the Music Player on the phone. It should refresh immediately.

Try deleting the files under both the memory card and mass storage,..
If that doesn't work...you can also delete the [102830AB]thumbnail_v4 file too, but I gotta warn you, I had to resync the phone with the pc for other apps that I've installed to come back..but that could be the refreshing part that takes awhile to do...the file does come back.. but to be safe.. just make a copy of it and put it somewhere.

I have this problem with the empty 'Untitled' album. It isn't located on the micro sd card like the rest of my music so should be on C:\ or E:\. What are my options to sort this problem out?

Worked perfect for me too, worth saying the mode you need to put the N8 in is called 'Mass storage'.

This worked for me the first time, but it then became corrupted again after adding my music. I have since moved all my music into the music folders on both the internal memory and my additional memory card but the files just corrupt again. Does anyone have any idea when a fix will be released as this is way past ridiculous.

Thankfully this only took me a few hours of research and experiments - compared to what some have been through (going by the information on this forum). Thanks for the key piece of information, Flagpole. The databases must be deleted from both the on-board, and memory card locations. Thanks again.

Hi TurboDiesel74,
The issue here is when deleting music from from your mobile device you should either remove the music from your music application on the phone or through Ovi music. If you try to delete it through file manager the music information within the application will still exist.

I've had a similar problem on a C5-03 which I solved. I know they use different versions of Symbian but there isn't a similar thread for the C5 so I thought I'd post here.
I also deleted the music directly from the memory card after Ovi Suite stopped recognising the music on my phone even though I could play the music on the phone just fine. This happened after I upgraded my memory card. After I deleted everything the music player thought it was all still there (there was album art and everything) and refreshing the library didn't work nor did trying to delete the albums manually in the music player. My way around the problem was to make a new folder using the artist name in the music directory (this is what normally happens when you add music) then putting in a few mp3's of that artist. After that I selected refresh library on the phone and it then added those few tracks and deleted from the list everything else! Success!

deleting 2 folders in E:\Private did the trick. If you cant see Private folder using Windows 7, try it on XP... just like i did...
