Just bought an N79 and generally extremely pleased with it! Howeve, the backlight fades out after about 5 seconds, no matter what I have set in the menu Tools->Settings->General->Personalistion->Display. I have the Light timeout set to 60 seconds but it doesn't matter what I set it to, the phone still fades it out after 5 seconds.

Any suggestions? It's driving me up the wall!

Check also the "Power Saver Time-out" in the same menu.

Do you have screen brightness turned up high? This can override other settings to save power.

The Light Sensor setting in that menu is in the centre position - is that the setting you're referring to?

I have tested recently the new N79 and had to send back it because of this bug again to my net operator.

I work with the phone barrier and with the N79 after automatic activation with a reactivation the display switches off over and over again after 5 seconds. Only after I had changed the value of "time to power saving mode" or had restarted the mobile phone, the original values of the display disconnection functioned again.

I had used these values:
Time to keylock: 45 seconds
Time to power saving mode: 90 seconds
Time to phone barrier: 30 min

Ah, so it's a known problem :-( I've tried turning off all of the locking and power-saving modes and no change...

I'm hoping that the next firmware update will fix this as it's driving me mad!

Aha, think I've fixed it!!! If you change the standby theme from None to something else (e.g. Date), then it seems to behave properly

Go to Tools->Settings->General->Personalisation->Themes->Power Saver and change it to Date.

I've now changed it back to None and it's still working!

Now if I could just get the D-pad thing to work again :-/

Not Works for me.
it only shows Date or what you choose for 2 seconds and screen goes black again. i think it is a small bug

Mine reverted back to having this problem again shortly afterwards, when it went into battery-saving mode (battery was nearly flat). Now I'm charging it and it has the same problem.

I've now gone back in and changed the power saver time-out to 35s and the light time-out to 35s and it works fine! It seems to be that whenever it goes into "battery almost dead" mode, it sets the timeouts to 5s, but then it doesn't reset the settings back again when you charge it.

How do we report this bug to Nokia?

use the contact us button on the top right of the page. has the update been released for the n79 yet or is everyone still waiting on it? that might actually solve some of your issues if it has not been released.

Ah thanks for the Contact Us bit, will do so.

I had a quick scan through the huge bug-fix listing on the Italian website referred to elsewhere and I couldn't see it but maybe I missed it? As far as I know the new release isn't out yet but I shall be watching for it with interest...

Ah I see, well the updates are usually a good thing and tho it may not be listed it could actually be addressed just not worded exactly like that. From what i have read it a major major update for your phone so i am jealous mine got a small one, well relative to what you will get. Yes i am hopefull that your firmware update will still be released before the year's end. Keeping my fingers crossed. be well, rad

Oh btw do you have a problem with your N73 that it keeps showing a voicemail waiting when there isn't one? My old N73 did that and the N79 does it too! I don't even have voicemail set up :-/

lmao, no actually my n73 is semi retired, i am currently using the n85 as primary and n82, n95 as secondary's. i have other issues but not that one. thanks and cheers for that update soon. rad.

Right, looks like this is in fact linked to the automatic phone locking. If you turn off the numeric-code lock then this problem disappears. You can still leave the keypad lock on, but just don't enable the passcode locking.

Hope this helps - Nokia please fix this!

Hi,

It's in Tools->Settings->General->Security->Phone and SIM card->Phone autolock period

It seems to be ok with the Keypad autolock period being used, but I have to have the Phone autolock period set to None.

Have you done the recent firmware update?  This might help...

I found the most reliable way to sort the problem out was to turn all locks off (keypad autolock, timed numeric lock, etc) and then go back to the standy screen; then go back in again and turn on only the keypad lock after 30 seconds.  Seems to work ok now.

Very frustrating this one and I still think there's a bug in the Nokia software...
