N70 Generic Firmware Question

N70 Generic Firmware Question

I have an Orange branded N70. I would like to get this flashed with the generic firmware so that I can get rid of the homescreen and fix all the known faults with the Orange software.

However I have a Line 2 as my business line. Will my line 2 still work with the latest generic firmware and also will the answerphone spool still appear?

Any help would be great.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

It's actually a very good question, in theory the Line 2 option is a Network specific feature and would not be related to what software you have in your phone.

If you do decide to get the unit flashed to the Generic vers please be aware that you CAN NOT flash back to your original Variant Software (Orange).

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

Thanks for that, I am positive i do not want the homescreen. But i cannot lose the line 2 functionality. WAP/Internet/MMS settings should not be a problem. I never want to use talk now, and can live without Orange TV as I have sky at home!

If anyone has done this successfully and kept line two and the spool can they let me know.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

funckyduck - I have the N70 on Orange, however, I got it sim-free so it is not orange branded and has the generic nokia firmware.

When I get a voicemail - It says "Voicemail on Line One" on the screen with the spool. I dont have a Line2 on my orange account so can't be 100% sure if it would work, but judging by the message I get relating to Line1, it looks like Line2 would not be a problem.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

with regard to my 3230 i was given the following information. i would assume it would be the same for a n70. best seek an independent repair centre and ask about this.

Can remove homescreen and install european alternate line service product profile. Which gives Line 2 access if required

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

How can you guys get the unbranded firmware?
I thought that the shop doing it had to use the same variant of the firmware but just the more up to date one.

I'm glad if it can be made generic as I have the vodafone one and I could be doing with losing some of the ties they put on.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

would this also stop the "cannot send protected objects " messages I get when sending midi files bluetooth or mms or is this a nokia thing?
Can't seem to get a straight answer on this from anyone!

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

Hi awmair!

You would still see this error regardless of what type of firmware you have installed. The DRM (digital rights management) built into the firmware will prevent this from taking place even if you have non-variant firmware.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

Why do nokia do this then ...........or should they do it as Sony ericsson don't, politics eh!

Nokia this is just another small interference factor that puts, me in particular, off the fone.

Other than this and one or two niggly things it's a good handset.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

im sorry, you are complaining that nokia does not allow you to break the law?

the drm is there to protect copy righted material. if you are getting that message, it means it is copy righted and you are not allowed to send it on to anyone else.

just because some other brands allow youto do this doesnt mean nokia should.

personally, i am glad nokia lets you do this. because of this more and more content providers will be willing to produce stuff for nokia phones, as they know it will be protected...

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

Kinda defeats the purpose of bluetooth and infra red transfer though huh!

Still I suppose it would make it easier to pick a fone if those features were not needed or couldn't be used as this case is.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

actually no it does not defeat the purpose of bluetooth and infrared. i use bluetooth to connect to my car kit on both my phones and to use as a modem on one.

you will find this feature will only show itself when content is protected. you will be able to send content you have created yourself, like a photo, to someone elese but they probably wont be able to send it on if they have a nokia phone

lol. why ask what your going to do when the 3 days are up? surely the app has a link within it to buy the full version?
suppose the next question will be where can awmair get a hacked version of ZIPMAN so he can send on all the copy protected apps to his mates?
if you want to install the same app onto other phones, why not just send the app via bluetooth from your PC? OK, so its not as convenient as doing it when out and about but its an option that doesn't require the ZIPMAN app.

i can confirm what karim said, it is illegal to copy, copy protected software without being granted a licence to do so

anyway, isn't this going off topic a bit?

All,

Yes this is going off topic and yes it is illegal to copy protected content.

This is a warning to all of you who have contributed on how to get around the copy protection and DRM software on Nokia phones. Do not discuss it again.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

Well I've had the phone flashed with the latest generic firmware and I can confim that line two IS still functional and the spool indicators work for both lines.

The phone is soooo much quicker without the dreaded Orange software all over it and I would recommend to anyone to have the phone flashed. Dont bother with Carphone Warehouse they were a bunch of wasters. I went to Westcomm in Bristol and they sorted it with no fuss at all.

Re: N70 Generic Firmware Question

Awmair, I quote - "Kinda defeats the purpose of bluetooth and infra red transfer though huh!"

Seraphim got there before me on this one but Bluetooth and Infra red by definition are methods of connectivity. As far as I'm aware, their implementation on mobile phones is not specifically designed for file transfer but as a means of connectivity - for connecting your phone to a compatible PC, a car kit, headset etc.

You may also find that since the DRM software is there to protect those that own copyrights, other phone manufacturers may in the future, be forced to include DRM software on their phones as well.
