N70 Gallery

Hi,

Got a replacement handset today, *seems* to have sorted out the resetting problem.

I have a question however, is is possible to put folders into the N70's media gallery? It's very pretty and all but it soon gets clogged up with stuff. For example I don't want pics I have just taken with my camera to be in the same place as videos I download or indecent pics sent from friends, so when I show my innocent grandmother the photo I have taken of her it does not show up next to a picture of my friend running **bleep** down the street.

I want a folder for camera pics, a folder for music vids, a folder for emoticons etc.. On my old SE P800 and even on my non-smartphone K700i the gallery used the disk folders to do this, so all I had to do was use the file browser, drag and drop videos into a folder called 'Videos' then next time I viewed the gallery it would show up, this doesn't seem to work on the N70, it ignores disk folders.

Is it possible to make the gallery observe sub-folders in the media folders? Is it possible to make pics taken with the camera to go automatically into a selected folder?

Thanks for any help!

Hi sebbelcher

N70 doesn't use folders in the way you would like. It uses Albums. Any image or video can be added to any number of albums, but the original image or video remains in the top level of the gallery... for all to see, including your grandmother.

It is possible to set the camera to capture images and videos directly into a named album (go to Camera; Settings; Add to album). Images and videos are captured to the same album.

I think this sucks TBH - the old gallery on the 6230 was better. Would it be possible to replace it with a 3rd party app?

i'd like to jog this one along as i'd really like to get round the issue of all items being displayable at once

Re: N70 Gallery

There's a couple of resolutions for this.

You can use FExplorer to hide certain files or folders and they will not be displayed in the Gallery.

Or you can use File Manager within the Tools menu. I use this as a shortcut on my up key and have also moved it out of Tools and onto the Main menu. You can flick right to left to flick between the phone memory or memory card. The folders listed in here are as simple as the 6230, ie. Images, Sound clips, Video Clips.....

Only thing I find is that you can't scroll through the data unless you open and close each item. Slightly annoying but hey, cant have everything.

I also use FExplorer to hide certain folders that I dont want other people to see, just in case someone gets their hands on my phone.

Hope this helps.

Re: N70 Gallery

Agreed. It should suppoer subfolders, just for the sake of organisation if nothing else! It's my only complaint of an otherwise great app though.

Re: N70 Gallery

By the way, setting the folder as hidden (at least if it's a subfolder of images) doesn't stop the gallery from reading the files inside it!

If I hide folders under images, the contents still show in the gallery...

Re: N70 Gallery

Very bizarre, never noticied that before. It hides it in File Manager though.

It only seems to be if the sub folder is in a default folder (Images, Sound clips, Video clips), anywhere else hides it ok and doesnt get viewed in the Gallery.

Re: N70 Gallery

Yeah, but if you move them to another folder, you wouldn't be able to drill down to view them in the gallery if you wanted to.

Can't have your cake and eat it I guess! :smileyhappy:

Maybe Nokia have made some changed in the 'newer' version of the gallery on the N80, which I can't wait for!

Re: N70 Gallery

Can't wait for the N80 too.

One thing I just noticied though. If you use the Gallery to view your pics and videos the shortcuts do not work, ie 1 to rotate, * to expand to full screen etc.

These work if you use File Manager though. Just confirms that I'm beter off using File Manager than the Gallery, I can see all my pics listed in alphabetical order, i can view what i like and hide (via FExplorer) what i like. The shortcuts works and layout is preffered also.

Re: N70 Gallery

Hi jimbob

Interesting... the shortcuts work in the gallery on my N70 - at least some of them.

5 - zoom
2, 4, 6, 8 - pan
* - full screen

Re: N70 Gallery

No it doesnt have thumbnails, shame.

Those standard shortcuts work but in file manager there are more shortcuts available, from memory they are:

1 - Rotate Anti clockwise
2 - Pan Up on zoom / Full Screen on video clips
3 - Rotate clockwise
4 - Pan left on zoom
5 - Zoom In
6 - Pan right on zoom
7 - Zoom, pressed again full screen
8 - Pan down
9 - Inactive
0 - Inactive
* - Full screen
# - Inactive

Think it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. I just find the gallery slow, much rather see the name of what i opening first.

Re: N70 Gallery

Very true, and thanks for the tips.

I'm the opposite however, as i'm too lazy to rename my pictures, I need to see the thumbnail view so I know what is is! :smileyhappy:

Should hopefully be having my Orange branded N70 flashed with the latest generic Nokia firmware later this week, so i'll have a proper play then.

Re: N70 Gallery

OK, got my N70 flashed by Phonezone in Newton Abbot, and all is well!

Great service, and very helpful.

Now much quicker navigating menus, gallery works properly as Nokia intended and i'm much happier with it!

Orange had better sort out their branding, otherwise when it comes to contract renewal time, i'll be getting my N80 elsewhere :smileytongue:

Re: N70 Gallery

The albums as nokia calls them are only virtual folders ie, they dont really exists thats why you cannot hide them using fexplorer. You will see if you try to view these albums in fexplorer that the albums dont actually exist. This is a change to the 6680 when you could create real folders and use fexplorer to hide them.

Re: N70 Gallery

Even in the 6600 i bought 2.5years ago i could move images into different folders and they actually MOVED. But in N70 its pointless it seems...

So in order to create folders and seperate images i have to use that fexplorer thingie?

Re: N70 Gallery

i recently upgraded my firmware to version 5.0609.2.0.1 from version 3.0546.2.3 and i noticed that everytime i take a picture instead of going to the Images folder, it creates a new folder and saves the pictures in there!

what gives? i'd like to save my pictures automatically in the Images folder, wihout subfolders. how do i do that?

pls reply. thx
