I purchased aN1661 today, had have it plugged in to charge the battery for 4.5 hours. When I hit the power key to turn it on it displays the time and message indicator until I release the key - then the screen goes off. Where is this charging indicator that the manual speaks of? How long does it take to charge this battery, 2 hours or 20. The user manual is about as useful as a screen door in a submarine.

You post isn't clear. Was the phone off when you charged it? The charging indicator on Nokia phone is at the top of the screen(usuall top right corner). It will have a picture of a battery with bars above it or in the battersy image. When this is animated it means the phone is charging. If you charge with the charger supplied in the box, it should take no more than 2hours to fully charge. You can always search for the complete user guide on this website

The phone had to be off as I attempted to turn it on by pressing the power key for up to 10 seconds and the phones only action was to display the time and number of messages. When I plugged the charger in the phone produced a tone, indicating to me that it was charging, there was nothing on the screen. As for the downloadable user guide, I went to the page with a photo of the phone, clicked on the PDF button. The first page said 'Nokia 2720 fold user guide' not 1661.

I don't understand why the phone would show that instead of asking for a pin when you turn it on. If it shown number of messages. It should be on already and ready to use. To get the user huge type 1661 guide into the search box at the top of this page

Problem solved - it was apparently on, but I had to hit the select button to activate the screen.
