Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

I cannot compare iphone with any other PDA/phone. iPhone works well? Yes it works, but it is so basic, it even don't have copy/past functions, only in the new iPhone that costs over $900. Can you customize iPhone like the others (windows mobile/phone, Symbian, Android, etc.) no, you can't. Don't compare such different things. The more technology you have, more problems you are able to get. I agree with some critics about the slow response, hang up, etc., but the others, with the same bunch of technology do the same. I am a technology geek and always installing and uninstalling things in my phones and the problems are the same in Symbian, Windows Mobile, Android, or else, and don't talk about prices because the most expensive thing you have in the market is the iPhone and it is so basic. I still give my vote to Nokia/Symbian and hope they get better. Remember that Microsoft upgrades its OS (XP, Vista, 7) every week.

The N97 mini is my first Nokia, and I love it!

How that is even possible?

Well, it does the job, in a small, very pocketable package. I have a few niggles, but basically everything works. Browser is good, maps works, email is a treat. Upload photos to facebook, etc etc. What really sells it for me is the keyboard. It's such a relief not to have to use virtual qwerty anymore. I could've got the Dext, but the camera is better on the N97 mini. Could get the N900, but it's too bulky and too expensive. Could've got the Satio - but no keyboard. Plus Ovi store makes it easy to get new apps. OK, content is not great yet but it's OK and getting better.

Every phone I get makes me tear my hair out at some stage. Mini has done that to me too. Same goes for every other bit of new technology I get. Maybe the iphone would be the exception, but then it costs 50% more (£600 in the UK for the 3Gs, vs £400 for the mini) and I wouldn't have the keyboard.

Overall, very happy with the mini.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

Whatever you say. I wish you the best with your mini. I have given up - I have sold the phone (N97) and lost over £250. Ovi Store does not work anymore since v12 came out in the UK (a few weeks before v2.0) that is. I can only use the web-version for now. A lot of software is broken even after numerous hard resets and firmware reinstalls. Updating software fails due to corrupt data. I have formatted, re-formatted, re-setted, re-re-setted... I am sick of it....

V2.0 is a joke. My connection is still being dropped roughly every 5 min during a call - "Connection Error" that is. When I answer a call with a locked display the phone reboots randomly. On Sunday it took me 10 minutes to initiate a call. As a mobile phone, this is a useless piece of plastic

I wish you all good luck, I have been following the posts here and I am sad to see that my problems are obviously shared by so many people.

Cheers,

Will

P.s.: What I didn't say - I should have known better. I also have the 6600 slide - the screen is broken (rainbow colours) and I had to send it off to repairs for the 4th time now (it seems to be a software glitch TOO as it randomly occurs when I remove and replace the battery). Guys, don't make the same mistake as me!

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

I disagree. After owning a fatally flawed N97, I have recently brought an iPhone- which is nothing short of being a fantastic little phone! I like the "boring" basic setup, there's less to go wrong. It is also a very fast phone compared to the N97, and is so easy to use! And customisation is simple- buy a case! Not all of us are tech geeks (I'm a complete squid when it comes to mobile phones, yet I can do all sorts of stuff with a computer. Go figure.) when it comes to phones. I sacrificed the personalization for a stable system, and it's the best $759 AUD I've ever parted with. I had been a loyal nokia owner for years, but the N97 was it for me. I believe the new 32gig iPhone will kill the iPhone killer. I only have a 3rd generation 8gig. Perfect for me. Anyway, time for bed for me, my alarm will wake me up at 6am instead of anytime between 6 & 6.05.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

I had two n97s. Sold two n97s. Lost 2x £250!

Got iPhone 3GS and I wasn't that happy with a mobile phone for sooo long time. Bare in mind that I had nokia phones for 10 years...

The only real suggestion I can make - Sell your N97 before it's too late.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

I mirror the last 2 posters. As a long term user of Nokias I had great hopes for the N97. however it has proved disasterous in many ways. Back in for repair again right now. In the meantime I have had enough and have got myself an iphone. The difference is so noticable in ease, quality and support. Much better user experience. When the N97 comes back I will be selling it on at a big loss but the frustrations I have had over that phone are just not worth it. Last Nokia I can see myself having until they get their act together. Very disappointed!!!

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

Even Nokia have given up.  We all gave up trying to get through the 'Care' system so we resorted to this forum, which Nokia have since also retreated from.

We may as well just start a topic to discuss what brands and phones we're all moving to now.

For me it's Samsung because of this idea of linking with my TV.

It seems other scorned Nokia fans are moving to the iPhone 3GS.  I grudgingly admit I am also tempted - for the app store if anything.  I think this is where Nokia really stuffed up.  I remember when Ovi store finally started working and the comments on all the buggy boring apps were embarassing.  Apple has really bent over backwards to open the door to developers, I believe Nokia / Symbian just tried to make money off them.

So.... Has everyone decided to drop Nokia then?  Seems most of us have.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

I can't wait for the new Blackberry Bold 9700 to come out, not sure how I will pay for it as I am now stuck in an 18mt contract with O2 because I got the n97 on a contract with them. Worst thing I have ever done (not because of O2 but because the N97 is a heap of junk) however I removed all the apps from my N97 and now it sorts of works as a phone (just)....

As for what phone to go for.....if apps is what you are looking for the the IPhone is your only real choice, so funny how the N97 was suppose to be the Iphone killer yet what Nokia have done is increased sales for the Iphone by selling such a heap of junk called N97.

Remember the good old days when you were dying to get your hand on a new Nokia and were sick if your friends got one first.....now people just laugh at you for spending money on your joke phone....

I think it is a real shame that someone from Nokia (hello this is your site and we assume you read these messages) could not post a simple message saying sorry. If I was in charge i would offer to replace all N97's with a replacement phone of your choice as this kind of publicity could kill of a company.

Come on Nokia dump OVI or shake it up to a higher standard...dumping would be a better choice.

also get rid of Symbian and look at RIM or someone else who can give you something that works from day 1.

It seems that Nokia are trying the Microsoft idea of launching products for the public to test and find the bugs for them....HELLO....not a good idea! Microsoft don't have much competition but the is so many phone makers out there now.

All the best to everyone.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

We're shouting in to the void here, Nokia have left the building (or they're forum linked employees have left and now work for Apple - I would too if I had a family to feed).

Yeah I too used to just grab the next Nokia that came out, now I just see them as cheap Chinese junk to be wary of before purchasing (oh hang on, they are made in China now, they are cheap Chinese junk).

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

I had all kinds of problems with my N96 - the last straw being push email not working following an update, because the new version didn't work with my firmware version (12.043), and Nokia abandoned this product in Asia-Pacific (worldwide customers can get firmware 30.033, but not here!)

So. In the end, I went to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and complained about all the issues I had with this phone. Within an hour, I had a call from them telling me they'd been on to Optus, and that someone would be in touch with me.

Within another 30 minutes after that(!) I had a call from Optus Customer Service and had a nice chat with the guy there who did his absolute best to get a resolution within 48 hours.

Two days later, and bang on time, he called to say he'd got nowhere with his internal tech support OR Nokia, and saw the best option as offering me another phone - and that I could have ANY phone on offer from Optus!!

He let me have a weekend to go to my local Optus store to choose a phone, and so after looking at all the Samsung models, HTC etc.. I went with an Apple iPhone 3GS 32GB.

And I haven't looked back!

Sure, it has some foibles, but incredibly minor, and more to do with me having to get used to a touch-screen phone.

But what I REALLY like is that EVERYTHING WORKS!!

My contacts appear instantly (not after a FULL MINUTE like on the N96)

It doesn't crash or hang five times a day, or get temperamental with my non-Nokia bluetooth headset.

The Maps feature is a bazillion times easier and more straight-forward to use than Nokia Maps. (Nokia should hang their heads in shame for that alone!)

And the Apps Store is a pure delight. 90,000+ apps and counting!

Battery life is not brilliant (so go buy lots of cheap chargers on eBay and leave them at home, work, car etc). But then the N96 wasn't much better. The thing with the iPhone is that you'll WANT use it SO much for checking email, sending texts, running Apps etc, you'll drain the battery daily,so in terms of battery performance, if you JUST used it as a phone it would surely run for days, but you could NEVER use this as just a phone!

Reception in my house is not as good as Nokia.

And THAT'S it!

So, my friends, get on to your local TIO and see what bottoms they can kick for you!

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

Installed Facebook for E71/E72 on my E90 - and it's better than the real thing, as U2 would say. Works like a charm! :smileywink: Try it on your 3rd Edition Symbian Nokia. You too can give up the bookmark. Applications at Ovi are growing. Ovi has impressed me everytime I've been there.

I've seen* the iPhone4/4S, iPad2 and, Moto RAZR for 60, 2 and, 5 minutes!

Love Symbian S60v3. Skipped v5. Anna has been great -- love Belle.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

Good to see someone who is easily pleased.  Last time I went to Ovi half the apps crashed my phone and were generally junk with damning comments all over Ovi.  I almost felt sorry for Nokia then just felt embarassed for them.

Android 2.0 should be interesting, I can't wait until it comes out, Q1 2010 can't come fast enough.

Nokia lost me when they canned the N900 in Australia to prop up sales of the failing N97.

Re: My experience with the N97 - "my last Nokia"

Excellent executive report about the use of N97.  English is my second language but I'm short for how explain a lot of failures with the daily use of this model. The "phone" application have a lot of problems. If I have open the data channel (twiter, or Nimbuzz) all time the conversation is broken. The GPS work very poor. The battery life is very low, in special if we are using the speakers for listen music (on 45 min aprx.) :smileysad: I like ear to nokia about that. I lost US$600 with this model.
