I'm being told I can't send an attachment (sound) in a text because it is over 300kb ? Seems a bit mean.

There is a limit to MMS sizes, and it is dependent upon carrier, but I dont think MMS can send anything near 1mb. T-Mobile for example has only 300kb limit. Send it via email if its too big.
