Managing numbers in contacts

I have an N97 and download my contacts directly from my MS Outlook contacts folder. Unfortunately, the numbers (many of which are International) are formatted to include brackets (ie +44 (0) 77** *******) which the N97 doesnt recognise. Is there any setting I can change to change this?
