The N72-1 is an older generation of Nseries phone running on S60 2nd edition fp3. These devices get reset when you perform a software update thus you will lose the sms's and contacts.
Before you do the update however you can use Nokia Pc Suite, which you will need to install before you can use the updater to create a back-up file of the phones contacts and sms's. Once you have done the update you can restore this back-up and you will have your messages/contacts back again.

The Content Copier application in the Nokia PC Suite (it's the first one in the window, the 'Backup' icon) will backup your entire phone memory including *ALL* sms, contacts, bookmarks, your profile settings, access point details, etc.
Once you're done with the backup, start the Nokia Software Updater (click on the update phone software icon). Follow the instructions given on-screen. And wait patiently until it says you're ready to use the phone. Do not, in any case unplug your phone, or try to turn it off while the update is going on. Make sure that your battery is full before you begin updating.
After update, restore the backup that you've made using PC Suite. Restart your phone, and you're ready to go ![]()
