OS to change after N8!
I'm a bit concerned about that, as Nokia always seem to change something and give customers that have just bought a handset the two fingers when the new one is out. No more updates, no more fixes and no more apps!
What do you guys think, will the N8 be a waste of money and out of date as soon as it comes out?
Sisters got iPhone 3, brothers got iPhone 4, both get updates and new apps etc at the same time. Plus tesco clubcard app.
But when you look for an app from likes of Tesco for your Nokia (slap in the face) new phones only! Cheers Nokia!

I'm not so sure about being a waste of money (because i don't know what it price is gonna be). I paid A$1200 for N97. It turned out to be waste of money...it shouldn't be if it was A$400. So it depends on what it price is gonna be and its "demonstrated" capabilities.
For the last bit of your question, yes in term of receiving updates.

Nokia tend to support there handsets with updates for at least a year, longer if there are still significant issues
+ S3 S4 and Meego will all be using QT as a base for apps so apps should be compiled aand released from all at the same time from the same source code,
finally with all 3 being open source it is hoped that alot more developers will be attracted to coding for them,
The main question with the N8 is has anybody managed to find a source selling to the UK sim free unlocked forunder £400 (bar Tesco)

Yes, 5p under £400 at mobilefun.co.uk ![]()
I reckon CPW will be your best bet when they announce pricing towards the end of the month. I've had some good deals from them in the past by buying a new model as a PAYG handset, instead of sim free. It's the exact same unlocked generic phone except you have to buy a sim with a bit of credit on it to get the network subsidy knocked off the price. Oddly though they don't do this with all phones (they didn't do it with the HTC Desire).

I can't wait to get it, all the features it has look great, I've been weighing it up against the iPhone 4.
I have always bought Nokia's, but got let down with the last handset (N96) which I got Sim Free at CPW for £549. The sound from the earpiece on the handset has always been muffled. Its been in for repair twice, both times i've been told nothing wrong with it. 3rd time they replaced the earpiece speaker, but its still the same.
You cannot have a conversation with anybody without saying "can you repeat that" all the time.
But when the repair shop looked at it the first call they try is the loud and clear "This is the Vodafone Helpline" They then say, whats wrong with it?![]()
So I have learn't the N96 is good for messaging, e-mail, as a camera and mobile web but not as what it was originally designed for, making old fashioned phone calls.
Oh, unless you call the Vodafone Helpline, you can hear that!
I know alot of people have told me its mostly like the handset, but they have changed the speaker.
So Is all I can put it down to is the small (only sceen with a magnififying glass) holes that is the earpiece itself. (below)

Partners handset is a cheapy Nokia and has a large oblong cut-out that actually resembles an earpiece, the call quality and sound is excellent. (below)

Why I am moaning and haven't placed my pre-order?
Because looking at the N8, there is a tiny little slit for the earpiece, is it going to be the same as the N96? I have read in other forums and by generally searching the net that other N96 users have found there's the same, so I know its not just me asking the question.

(Circled) Small slit for earpiece "NOKIA N8"

lol wut
There's nothing wrong with the sound from the N96,
I've been using it for the last 2 years and have never once considered the sound muffled,
as always tho the best advice is to ask to test the device in the shop before you buy,
there should be a demo model somewhere that you can slip your sim in and use for 5 mins, to include making and receiving a call as part of your test

I will buy N8 if I have money to spare. Good thing I still don't have enough money to buy that, given the fact that it's part of the latest Nokia phones that will be running the freezing and slow-in-development OS. I guess I will start saving money for N9 which will run on Meego. Or for the N8-01.

Let the N8 in the wild first. Then you decide based on day to day usage by other users.

Does anybody know it tethering is supported on the Nokia N8 (without the need to download an additional app)?

BenGy: Concerning the small earpiece hole on the N8. I got my N8 yesterday (Finland) and found no problem with the earpiece and sound quality. It is in fact very clear to hear the person on the other end speak. So I don't think the small earpiece is a problem.

BenGy if you would've researched the N96 issue a bit you would've found out that there were a few phones that left the factory with a protective cover in the earpiece (internally) and this, and not the shape of the holes, is what caused some N96 to have muffled sound.
The repair itself was very easy to do in a repair center, basically dissasemble the phone and remove the plastic foil left there.

I bought my X6 sight unseen seeing the specifications. Never going to make that mistake again.
As for the N8, I've seen just the one review on CNET UK which can be summarized as "great hardware let down by lousy software."

I have pre-ordered N8.
But it in my mind Nokia could really make this phone wonderful by installing a TINA TURNER app. This was inspired by an old friend of mine BenGy.
What would this app do and how would it look? Well the icon could be Tina's trademark legs. And it would direct you to all of Her songs, interesting facts about Tina, and a dance section where you could learn all of her moves? Also, if its running, when you press any icon on the N8 instead of Haptic feedback it plays a line from one of her songs...
Eg, Press the weather icon and " I CANT STAND THE RAIN"
Press the Camera shutter whilst phone is locked and " STEAMY WINDOW"
If bluetooth (v3.0) is on and it senses an iPhone4 or Android dufus is near-by it plays, "WHAT YOU GET IS A WHAT YOU SEE" - implying they are simple phones for morons. It might also play, "SHOW SOME RESPECT" or "COMPLICATED DISASTER"
For all N97 owners when you switch on your N8 the phone doesn't do the usual Nokia hand shake, it plays "YOU BETTER BE GOOD TO ME" After a few months it reverts to "SIMPLY THE BEST"
Oh and any Symbian deserters or those thinking of ot, N8's Tina app will play to you "WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT" or "LETS STAY TOGETHER"
This is why I have bought the N8. Does anyone know if this app was one of the winners in the design an app competition for the N8?
What app would you like to see on the N8? Do you like mine?

Hi everybody,
On Wednesday, this week, I got my N8. The orange one.
It is just a amazing device, even better that I expected.
I am also happy to see all your posts here under this topic
and I hope that you are satisfied to your devices, is it N8
or some other fine product.
