Hi, best way to update software on Nokia phone is to install Ovi Suite 2 and Nokia Software Updater onto your computer from Nokia website, If you look at the top of this page, open Download Software tab. Also before updating, sync contacts and messages and back up phone with Ovi Suite, then open Nokia Software Updater and run it, it will detect phones software and tell you the latest version that is available. Also use usb connectio for phone NOT bluetooth.
Good Luck

The easiest way to update the firmware is FOTA. Type *#0000# at the stand-by screen, select Options, Check for updates. If there are any updates you'll be prompted to download and install them. You can use your data connection or Wireless LAN for this. It's hassle-free. You won't have to backup and restore if you're using this method.
But sometimes new firmwares may not be available on FOTA. Then you will have to download and install Nokia Software Updater and flash your phone.

Hi,I disagree with deepestblue, (sorry) fot 2 reasons.
1) Not all updates are available over the air !
2) It is always adviseable to back up first ( better to be safe than sorry), Google how to update softwate on Nokia phone and see what you find ! I know latest Nokia phones have user data protection, but think it is more advisable to use computer than phone !
The decision is yours, both methods are possible, so make your own choice, just RESEARCH first.
Good Luck

carman58, NSU involves another variable - the PC. Just see how many threads are there in this very forum complaining about bricked phones. FOTA is better in that case. I fully agree with you that not all updates are available over the air. And in that case you WILL have to use NSU.
Regarding backup, it's advisable to do it periodically. And it's GOOD to backup before you update. But not needed in the newer phones that come with UDP.

and both methods can work, I prefer NSU and haven't had a problem, I also tend to drag and drop anything I can onto phone's mass memory and install from the phones files system but thats just me ! I was simply trying to help a new user
