How to format a series 60/smartphone

[ Edited ]
I have seen a few people here asking about what to do if their phone becomes a little temperental. Some of the time you can fix issues yourself by formatting the device or by restting it. There are two ways, first you can enter *#7370#. This will reset it to the factory settings and wipe most of the stuff from the phone (contacts, connection settings etc).

If that doesnt work you can format most series 60 phones by holding down 3 * green whilst switching it on. Do this untill you see the word formatting or untill it prompts you to enter a city.

be warned, you can loose everything by doing either of these things...

Hmm good point. Another code that performs a reset though not a full format as per the codes you have given is the following.

*#7780# - Restore factory settings. (Warning! you will lose useful data when entering this code just like *#7370 or [Green, pick up call] + [3, def] + [*+] )

Personally I would take out the SIM card and any memory cards when re-formatting a handset.

Maybe we should list all useful codes in one place and make the thread a sticky? The following codes are safe to use and will not result in loss of data.

*#06# - Display handset's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) Number

*#0000# - Display Firmware Version.

*#2820# - Display Bluetooth MAC address.

Re: How to format a series 60/smartphone

im not sure showing them all could be a good idea, some can actually damage a phone in europe if you use a US code and vice versa for instance.

i like the bluetooth mac code though. im sure karim will breeze through and remove the ones he thinks are naughty at some point.

You won't lose Snakes or Card Deck as these are stored in the phone's ROM. You will lose high scores unless you copy the relevant file, e.g. for Snakes, if you copy the files C:\System\Apps\6R45\sno.bin and C:\System\Apps\6R45\sts.bin then you will save your high score data.

A format as you rightly guessed means restoring your phone back to its factory default settings and also stripping all data (contacts/calendar entries/notes etc) and any user installed applications. In effect a format will revert your phone back to a state as it was when it was 'fresh from the box' and you first switched on.

If I Re-format my phone It will not actually delete the operating system itself? All it will do will completely reset it (an remove contacts notes etc)

The phone's OS will not be deleted during a format. The phone's OS is stored in ROM (Read Only Memory) and therefore can never be deleted by the user. As mentioned above a Format will revert a handset to a 'fresh out of the box' state.

Re: How to format a series 60/smartphone

Reformatting the phone has no bearing on whose network the phone is on. That is purely determined by the SIM card.

Reformatting has also no impact in the state of the SIM lock (operator lock). If the phone is locked to a particular operator's network, reformatting won't unlock it. If the phone is not locked to any operator's network, reformatting won't lock it to one, either.

The "green,*,3" method of formatting a 6600 doesnt work on a 6680, does anyone know how to do this on a 6680 ?

Yes it does but you have to try it a couple of times, it's quite tricky to press exactly the correct buttons.

Re: How to format a series 60/smartphone

Will the lock code be needed to format my E60? If not, the settings for locking the phone by sms and SIM removal will be useless. So, lock code needed (regardless which way used to format) ?!

then you are doing it wrong.

one of the features of series 60 phones is the ability to totally format the device. If it doesnt work, your just doing it wrong.

dont forget the *# code just resets it, if you want to format it then you need to power it on with the keys i mentioned held down.

can a mod lock this thread now?

You said one can loose everything while trying to format a phone. Please could you throw more light on this because i want to format my phone if that will help rectify the error i'm experiencing now with my Nokia 6600. Do you mean the phone will spoil?

I have tried the "green, *, 3" method of formatting 6600 and it worked perfectly for my Nokia 6600. Thanks so much. I wish you well.
